I’m in the minority, I appreciated the film but I was disappointed by it. I felt like every time the film got going it would step on its own toes and kill the momentum. And this film had plenty of moments that were outstanding (including one sequence that I won’t spoil here… iykyk)

The trailers and ads really hype up the supernatural action, but none of that really gets going until about 2/3rds through the movie.

I agree about Michael B. Jordan though, I liked him before but this is his best performance to date.

Saw a theory online about Sammie that ... I either missed in the context of the story, or they just didn't explain well enough in the film. If there was a little more exposition on this, I feel like it would have made the movie infinitely better by giving Sammie's part in the tale more weight:

There's a lot of evidence pointing toward the fact that Sammie made a deal with the devil prior to the events of the film to enhance his musical abilities. In the scene in the car as he and one of his cousins (can't remember if it was Smoke or Stack), he plays a sample of his music much to the bewilderment of his cousin who can't believe how good his younger cousin suddenly sounds with the guitar. It also better explains why the main vampire was so keen on finding Sammie and taking his soul for his own.

Interesting theory. The theater I went to didn't have 15-20 minutes of previews so I missed a couple of minutes as I walked in 5 minutes after the advertised showtime so I was wondering if I missed some sort of prologue.

Yeah, they had a brief prologue voice-over that explained that music can at times attract evil spirits, which leads directly into the first scene showing Sammie after the events from the previous night dragging himself back to his dad’s church.

This move has incredible word of mouth legs. It’s only gonna dip around 12% this weekend from opening weekend. A ‘good’ dip in a second weekend is around 50%. For an R rated movie this is unheard of.

That's awesome, doesn't really look like it dropped off during the week, breaking $100mil in... what, 9 days? That's fantastic considering it opened at $45mil last weekend.

Just saw it today; it was amazing
Haven't seen it yet, definitely intrigued though. Can someone explain how Mr movie on murph and Andy gave it a D bordering on an F? Also didnt realize it was a vampire movie until I read some reviews, I'm so confused!

I haven’t heard his review but that really surprise me. Do you know what gist of his complaints were?

That guy is no Ebert. I’m a bit of a movie nerd/snob myself and have some incredibly strong disagreements with him on both popcorn movies and more serious stuff.

I'm going to put my thoughts as a spoiler for those that haven't seen it.

I would guess one complaint could be the From Dusk Till Dawn vibe of the movie as it changes gears about 2/3 of the way through. I wish I hadn't read about the vampire aspect of the movie beforehand. The first part of this was incredible. I had no idea where it was going but it was captivating.
