Does Anyone Else Just Not Really Watch the Games Anymore?

I have been watching when I can, but not appointment TV like in years past. Tonight for example, wife and I are going over to her Dad's house for dinner. We'll get there at 6, eat at 6:30. Normally I'd scarf it down and tell her we need to get going for a 7 PM tip, or simply watch it there, but tonight I imagine we'll take our time. I'll eat at a normal pace, chew my food, conversate a little more than I normally do, use a napkin when I need to, hell, I might even offer to wash the dishes. When I get done with that around 7:15, I'll offer to bring dessert out. Then I'll wash those dishes when done, and by a quarter til 8 maybe I'll pull out the phone and check the halftime score. What follows will be a decision, based on the score, whether I decide to watch the replay once we get home. I'm thinking it won't be happening.

I've watched every game. Your either a Cyclone fan or your not. You don't get to pick and choose.

It's entertainment. If I'm not enjoying it, I'm not going to spend my time on it.

I'm not going to switch allegiances and pretend I'm a fan of some other school just because they're winning, or act like I'm not a huge ISU fan because they're losing, but I'm not going to schedule my free time around watching absolutely pathetic basketball that doesn't entertain me or give me anything back out of some sense of obligational fanhood.

I saw Iowa State was 24 point dogs against Baylor and thought “I bet Chizik and the boys get a late field goal to cover”. Then I realized it wasn’t 2009 and wasn’t football.

24 points is the largest spread I can remember
And yet I'm still feeling the urge to take Baylor

I’ll take a peak if it’s close in the last 10 minutes but this team isn’t worth blocking time out of your night for. We’re awful and the bulk of our production comes from 2 seniors and a junior. Anyone suggesting someone is being fair-weather for not watching games this year is out of their mind and doesn’t understand just how bad we are right now.

If there ever was a year to have our worst team ever, this is the year.

Looking forward to fans in the stands, a real conference season, holiday tourneys, and a legit NCAA tourney for true March Madness in 2022.

And a new coach of course.

I still watch. When the team as coming back on Saturday I still got a little juice. My oldest likes watching with us and it's something I hope to share with him for the rest of my life. But if I said I was enjoying it might be a stretch.

I watch because our very predictable pattern makes for very easily gambling. I've had more luck getting on the live line when Iowa State makes a run than I have no any other type of sports bet. For example, when we went ahead against OU I think the line dropped all the way down to OU -4, which was absolute theft.

I am still excited for the madness. Even though CBB as a whole seems really tough to watch this year.

I haven't watched a single non-ISU game. I probably won't watch a minute of the NCAA tourney. It's honestly just sapped my entire appetite for CBB, I watch the NBA when I sit down to fold clothes and stuff.

I watched a little bit of our last game against Oklahoma when I saw that we had pulled it close and even had gone ahead for a bit ...and then was pretty much immediately reminded why I haven't watched an MBB game since December of 2020. It was the same old:

- Go down big initially
- Pull within 5 or maybe even take a less than 5 lead
- lose in a fiery storm of a bazillion turnovers and just overall mismanagement on Prohm's part

I used to be much more of a basketball fan than a football fan and used to watch or listen to every MBB game I could and now that's completely reversed. I'm at the point where I hope we lose out the season because I think that's the most realistic scenario in which Prohm would be canned which at this point is just the best thing for this program in the long-term (and trust me, before 2020-21 I would NEVER have been this apathetic that I'd unironically think losing out would be the thing that would save the program)

This deserves a poll. I haven't watched a game this year. I can't; it's just too heartbreaking. I watched my dad's decline with lung cancer, and I feel like I did during that time (not hyperbole).

My kind of favorite thing to do is watch Kentucky, Duke, and UNC get beat. THen to watch the announcer talk about what Kentucky needs to do to stay in the hunt to make the tourney, even though they have a losing record. Same with Duke. They are very average and the announcers talk the whole game about them making it, even though they don't deserve it. They just expect them to be in and so they figure out a way to get them in.

I know what you mean. ISU sucking definitely contributes some to me not wanting to watch. Also just seems like talent is down compared to recent years. If there is an obvious can't miss next level talent, obvious #1-lottery pick out there I have yet to hear about it or see it. Nothing against Luka Garza and Ayo Dosunmo, but they just aren't huge needle-movers.
Between being able to sit on my couch and make wagers on games and watching the Hawks play occasionally with my father in law, I have caught enough CBB that I kind of know what's going on. I'll still make a bracket and watch the madness. Just much more intriguing when our guys are good.

It's a weird year. I would not be surprised if they do something goofy like put UNC, Duke, Kentucky in the First 4 or something. Better yet, watch them run the table in the conference tournaments and seal auto bids despite being like 13-15.

That's legit. If they make the tourney that way. I wonder if they would give Iowa State a 16 seed if we ran the big 12 tourney? I know we won't but it would be interesting to see if they gave us a 15 or 16 seed.

Back when Johnny was the coach, I'd drive three miles on eastern Iowa rural roads during subzero January deep-freezes to find an a.m. signal to catch the games. Sometimes, I'd connect a radio antenna to the cold-air-return ductwork, in an attempt to hear the game. Yeah, I used to love ISU basketball. Haven't watched a game this year. Last year showed me all I need to see. Done till Prohm is replaced.

At a time when people debate whether or not it's worth it to have ESPN+, this really hits home for me. Not every game used to be on TV (not even close) and extreme NE Iowa had one radio station that carried ISU; an AM station no less, so you were scrambling for coverage after dark. I made more than a few night game road trips so I could pull in a big game. I think that's why I still prefer listening to John and Eric vs the TV broadcast. Pete and Eric were my go to for a lot of years.
