I think that only catches UHF HD correct? when the analog signals go bye-bye in Feb, 5 and 8 should broadcast their HD back in VHF. Currently they are broadcasting their HD in UHF (>13)

I am I wrong?

Yeah you are correct. I am not really sure it matters all that much, but if it does, I will just swap out with a new antenna.

As I understand it, the stations will continue using the same UHF channels carrying their digital/HD signals now, but the channels are "re-mapped" to continue to appear at their old positions on your TV (5, 8, 13, etc.). The old analog VHF channels will cease to be used by TV stations. In other words, if you can get digital/HD channels with an OTA antenna now, you should still be able to after the analog channels are turned off in February.

My guess is that it will be resolved within a couple weeks.

Lets hope you are right. I switched to dish to save money. From the looks of it, I may have to spend more. Grrrr.

Not exactly. Many stations have moved to UHF, but not all. For example, here in DFW, channel 8 (analog) has moved temporarily to channel 9 for DT, but will move back to 8 after Feb 2009. Also after Feb 2009, Channel 11 (now 19 DT) will move back to 11, and channel 52 (now 51 DT) will move to 9. I think it is only the lower VHF frequency channels that are going to be allocated for other services.

As others have mentioned, go to antennaweb.org, and it will tell you the frequency assignments for your area. You can then decide if you can get by with a UHF-only antenna, or if you need a VHF/UHF combo.

That was my understanding as well.

Good to know. Everyone can just ignore what I said then... :mask:

Doesn't surprise me. Charlie Ergen, Dish Network's CEO is a cheap skate when it comes to programming.

While it feasibly COULD happen with DirecTV, I really doubt it will. They charge a slight premium over Dish, but that is one of the reasons they never end up in these types of situations.

You get what you pay for IMO.

Dish Network is a joke, plain and simple. I wouldn't give up my Directv for anything. I didn't have it for the last week due to storms and I nearly went bonkers.

Couldn't agree more. When I had Dish Network, they were always in some sort of programming dispute, normally over money. I don't recall ever hearing about DirecTV being in a programming dispute.

This is what it looks like from Grimes...

Here's an abridged version of what it looks like from Ames. If I'm reading it correctly, the four channels that were previously on VHF (5, 8, 11, 13) will be back there come February...

WOI-DT 5.1 ABC Frequency: 5 (vhf)
KDIN-DT 11.1 PBS Frequency: 11 (vhf)
KDMI-DT 23.1 MNT Frequency: 31 (uhf)
KFPX-DT 39 ION Frequency: 39 (uhf)
WHO-DT 13.1 NBC Frequency: 13 (vhf)
KCCI-DT 8.1 CBS Frequency: 8 (vhf)
KCWI-DT 23.1 CW Frequency: 23 (uhf)
KDSM-DT 17.1 FOX Frequency: 16 (uhf)

I knew there was a reason I don't watch TV. One less thing to worry about paying for when I get back to Iowa.

this is funny, we are in 2008 and we have to use attenas still to watch TV. You would have thought technology would have gone farther by now, for christ sakes we put a man on the moon over 40 years ago.
