This is quite a gut punch to my business (I've already put in many months of work on all these titles) but we knew more was still coming. Theaters in some countries would be doing fine now but are starved in that they depend on American releases. As an example Korean cinema was already on a roll and now they've had a period with radically less virus than us where their theaters can operate but only with Korean new releases, still theaters there can't hit their regular numbers lacking America's biggest cultural export.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this news should mostly help those International theaters beings how many International markets still don't have access to HBOMax, which means going to the theater will be the only options in those countries. At least for them as well this mostly ensures there won't just be further delays of Warner releases.

Yeah specifically Asian theater markets have been open for almost half a year now with no significant risk of operation, they've just been starved for hollywood releases. It's good for them and good for our business with them, certainly better than never ending delays.

US and to a slightly lesser extent europe still devastated, like down 97% devastated. Canadian theaters have been in similar situations as asia where they could have opperated somewhat well but product starved.

I agree, this has big ramifications and will likely cause Disney to review their 2021 release calendar.
I like to buy movies on digital but if this is the new normal for movies I could justify having a monthly ($14.99) HBOMAX subscription. I used to have to wait 4 months after a movie released in theaters and buy the film for $19.99. Not only may I no longer need to wait to watch a movie but I may not need to purchase another movie. The next time I want to have a DCEU marathon I can just shell out $15 for a month and watch them all. I guess now I just need to invest in a Dolby Atmos setup and I’ll be set.

Honestly I don't think it should. I think if I were Disney or another company like this, it would cause me to actually want to hold my movies for longer. People will want to be back in theaters and back to regular life ASAP. We aren't that far off from a vaccine. For example, putting Black Widow on Disney+ instead of in theaters I think is a huge mistake, and these movies from WB will be in a lot less demand for theater tickets, which could bump the ticket sales for other studios.

All of that said... What an absolutely uninspiring slate for WB. Of that list I honestly probably would only watch Dune (which I am very excited about) and Space Jam (which my kids are very excited about) if you gave them to me for free.

People will want to be back in theaters and back to regular life ASAP. We aren't that far off from a vaccine. For example, putting Black Widow on Disney+ instead of in theaters I think is a huge mistake, and these movies from WB will be in a lot less demand for theater tickets, which could bump the ticket sales for other studios.

All of that said... What an absolutely uninspiring slate for WB. Of that list I honestly probably would only watch Dune (which I am very excited about) and Space Jam (which my kids are very excited about) if you gave them to me for free.

Just personal feeling based on character merch sales in my job, but I think if covid hadn't happened BW may have been Marvel's first truly disappointing box office. Could work out for perception that way.

For me, I've definitely got a lot more interest than you. I can't wait for Dune, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman 84, Godzilla vs Kong, Space Jam, Matrix 4 and Mortal Combat.

What WB is doing is allowing audiences to make a choice based on their comfort level, which is a pro-consumer stand. WB is earning a lot of praise from the fanboys and hate from the theater industry (rightfully so).

I think Disney will have to follow suit in some way as they can't continue to sit on their films and let their titles continue to pile up. They are on track for 4 Marvel films to release in 2021, and will be starting filming soon on their 2022 films so those films cannot be delayed any more.

I think you're taking the extremely rosy view. It's also a move to prop up HBO Max, which had a really bad launch for a streaming service that puts it way behind it's competitors. It's probably also a way to try and force Roku to add HBO Max on it's platform. There is a lot, lot more at play here than any play for the benefit of consumers.

My point is I think we'll have a vaccine by the time Black Widow is supposed to hit theaters on 5/7/21. There is no reason to move off of that date, especially this early. Even if they were disappointing box office wise, what does that look like for an MCU movie? Every one but Ant Man and the Wasp and Dr. Strange earned over 800 million in Phase 3 and those two made 622 million and 677 million respectively. Let's say they are incredibly disappointing - 200 million each. To hit that, you'd still need 10 million downloads at 20.00 each. That seems extremely unlikely. I'd rather risk it, take the likely 400 million for it and Shang Chi, wait for Eternals and Spider Man (which will make an absolute buttload) in the winter and move on from there.

My thinking is that WB had to have run a ton of numbers to come to this conclusion, and if tells me that dissemination of a vaccine just doesn’t look good for at least a portion of 2021. I think this announcement is part reactionary to Tenet’s box office numbers and part pessimism as to how soon we’ll return to normalcy.

Good article detailing all the disrupting backlash the big WB bomb just set off in the Hollywood background. I'm not going to lie, but this thing could turn into one monstrous complicated mess. I'm still not necessarily shocked that WB made the move, but I am completely shocked by how they have gone about it, which seems to be opening themselves up for a huge litigating nightmare.

Specifically as it relates to the DCEU, it looks like all the Wonder Woman people are getting treated really well through this, but they might be the only ones. The article says that James Gunn with Suicide Squad is actually one of the few directors that doesn't care where his movie is released, but rather just simply isn't pleased with the piddily settlement deal WB is offering him due to it going to streaming.

Interesting interview with Joe Manganiello where he details a bunch about the never-made Ben Affleck written Batman movie. Man does that movie sound interesting to me.
