Again, I'm a big rankings guy, so I figured I'd update my overall DCEU/Marvel rankings to include Suicide Squad. I'm including the MCU movies simply because the DCEU only has 3 movies so far, which makes for a pretty lame list.

  1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier – Thought this movie had the best drama and best action scenes of all the movies
  2. Marvel’s The Avengers – Iconic way to pull everything together with the best villain in the MCU
  3. Captain America: Civil War - Most fun and one of the funniest movies on the list. Also produced the best action sequences, had some of the best character moments, and showcased the best balancing act of so many characters. Biggest downfall was having a very good, but not great story line, which kept it from topping my list.
  4. Iron Man – Epic way to start the Universe with an unbelievable star for a headliner. Never got into the Iron Monger villain though.
  5. Guardians of the Galaxy – Best space epic since the original Star Wars movies. Also was probably the funniest movie of the MCU so far.
  6. Man of Steel - Unlike many others, I actually really liked this movie, particularly the casting, the score, the cinematography, and the villain. Unlike many Marvel movie's villains, Zod actually had a point to being there.
  7. Ant-Man - Had super-low expectations, but walked away pleasantly surprised. Yet another weak villain, but contained some great comedy with some great actors. Paul Rudd won me over when I once was really skeptical of him.
  8. Captain America: The First Avenger – Epic first-half of the movie with Cap’s origin story, but believe it or not, I found Red Skull a little underdeveloped. Loved the WWII time period aspect of this one.
  9. Iron Man 2 – Many will mock me, but I actually really enjoyed this movie and actually enjoyed it more than Iron Man 3. Make fun of me all you want, but I didn’t think Whiplash was that bad. I think this movie gets unfairly criticized.
  10. Avengers: Age of Ultron – Fun movie, but suffered from too much CGI action, too many characters, and too many storylines. Big disappointment overall to me, second only to Batman v Superman, mainly due to expectations.
  11. Thor: The Dark World – Criticize me if you will, but I actually liked this movie and thought it got an unfair bad wrap. I didn’t find Malekith that bad and I actually liked this movie more than the original Thor.
  12. Iron Man 3 – Don’t know what it is, but I just never really got into this one, and it probably had something to do with the big Mandarin villain twist towards the end. Also never really liked Killian either. Again, I surprisingly like Iron Man 2 better
  13. Thor – Don’t know what it is, but I just never got into this storyline or villains as much as the others. Again, I surprisingly liked Thor: Dark World more.
  14. Suicide Squad - Had all the potential in the world to be a great movie, but just wasn't. Had some fun stuff, introduced some great characters, but suffered from terrible pacing, terrible villain, terrible editing, and too many plot holes. Deadshot and Harley Quinn were the highlights.
  15. Batman v Superman - Haven't walked away from any of these movies quite so disappointed, mostly due to expectations, as I REALLY wanted this to be good. Bad characterization, confusing plot, too many Easter eggs, too many plot holes, bad editing, too much CGI. While there were a few things I liked, particularly Affleck as Batman and Gadot as Wonder Woman, I really hope what this movie did wrong can be corrected.
  16. The Incredible Hulk – Decent movie, but not great. Never was into Norton for the role, so was glad when the switch was made.

Warner Bros. announced a few days ago that Man of Steel 2 is officially in development, which I'm not surprised with, but I'm curious on what DC/WB is doing with the DC universe.

Why have BvS end the way that it did, only to announce that Superman will also be a main character in the Justice League movie and then announce that MoS2 is in development? It completely takes away from the end of BvS and ruins any awesome Superman reveal because we all know that it's coming. What a mess the DC universe is turning out to be.

Can't say I'm surprised by your review as your thoughts were very similar to mine. I know you were very excited for this movie (as was I), so hopefully I didn't ruin it for you at all.
What is funny to me, I was ready to defend it against the anti-dark comic book movie fans only to find this to not fit the mold I was expecting. The soundtrack was on point I guess.
To me, Suicide Squad should have been a movie not for the faint of heart. It should have been rated R, gritty, dark and maybe even hopeless to a certain extent. Deadshot and Flag could have been established as the beacons of hope, maybe even Diablo if done right. This movie tried to be happy go lucky with bad people and they couldn't really even convince you they were that bad.
Just didn't work.

It sounds like that was Ayer's original intention. Do you think that maybe we could get that version eventually? Similar to Superman 2: The Richard Donner Cut. Although it's a bad habit, I think WB should go that route again on the Blu-Ray release of Suicide Squad with the theatrical and Ayer version available in the same package.

I'd be perfectly on board with what you were hoping for. Just make it a good movie!!!!! I'm less concerned with exact tone, give me whatever (I do like variety at the same time), and more concerned with getting a good movie!!!! Maybe the biggest frustrating part with the last two DCEU movies is that they both had all the potential in the world to be great.... they just weren't.

Nice to see someone else who appreciated Man of Steel. I actually loved Michael Shannon's Zod in that movie and thought he might be one of the best overall villains period on the entire list. Looks like you liked Batman v Superman a bit more than me though.

My list DCEU/MCU differs greatly - I'm ranking mine by the criteria "if I have weekend afternoon available, which movies would I want to watch the most:

1. Iron Man - best casting of any superhero, perfect mix of action, humor, and drama. Best origin story out of these films

2. Guardians of the Galaxy - best ensemble, great humor and blend of sci-fi/fantasy elements, and amazing soundtrack

3. Iron Man 3 - I loved the Mandarin reveal. I thought that was great. Just a good ol' fashioned revenge tale

4. Captain America - my 4 year olds favorite superhero. An above-average film, but one that has great replay-ability

5. Man of Steel - the action scenes are great. I thought the scene where Superman learns to fly, which to me looked like a new take on the "leaps tall buildings in a single bound" was a stroke of genius.

6. Avenger's: Age of Ultron - I loved the premise of this movie and really enjoyed the action.

7. Captain America: Winter Soldier - not saying this is a bad movie, in fact it was great, but it's replay-value isn't really high on my list

8. Thor - fun movie that didn't really take itself too seriously

9. The Avenger's - I just do not get the premise at all. Why was Loki working for Thanos via that proxy? That just never made sense to me. Action scenes are the saving grace from putting it lower

10. Ant-Man - not a whole lot of action and I didn't really think it was even all that funny. This might be my biggest disappointment - which just shows the caliber of movies that Marvel/Disney has made.

11. BvS - I could see this becoming a guilty-pleasure movie for me in the coming months. Maybe create a drinking game for each person Batman & Superman kill.

12. The Incredible Hulk - I still laugh at the "you wouldn't like me when I'm hungry" line. I have no idea why Tim Roth was cast as the villain. He's a great actor, but he just was not a great casting choice.

13. Iron Man 2 - I liked Sam Rockwell's character, Whiplash was meh and it was a nice segue to introduce Black Widow.

14. Thor: The Dark World - I have seen this movie probably 5 times I don't understand the Ether. Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston felt under-used, despite having significant screen time. I'm also upset that Chris Eccleston gave up playing Dr. Who so he could explore film opportunities - like playing a space elf

Haven't seen Suicide Squad or Civil War yet

Just finished watching the Ultimate Edition. I liked it. I didn't feel like it was too long or too dark. I would have liked more story on Doomsday and more Wonder Woman, but at least it got me excited to see her movie. My daughters did like that there's a girl super hero now, and as a dad with three daughters I like that there's a kick ass woman too.

And for what it's worth it thought Suicide Squad was entertaining. I understand what people are saying about continuity across the films but as a summer popcorn movie I thought it was fine. The final fight was kind of stupid, and I wish they'd explained Diablo more - that was a complete WTF moment as someone who doesn't follow the comics. I wanted more Joker. I liked the sociopathic/sadistic take on it, compared to the random chaos that Ledger's Joker favored.

Suicide Squad is #1 at the Box Office, although it was a significant drop-off from last week. Word is that it needs to make at least another $300 million to even break-even. Edit: I should have noted that it has brought in $384 million over the past two weeks, and the article I saw said that it needed to gross $750-800 million to break-even. Most of that money must have been spent on marketing, because the budget for the film itself appears to have been $175 million.

On top of that, Patty Jenkins (Director of the new Wonder Woman movie), responded to a letter from a former WB employee that claimed WW is another mess:

“Don’t try to hide behind the great trailer. People inside are already confirming it’s another mess. It is almost impressive how you keep rewarding the same producers and executives for making the same mistakes, over and over.”

Thanks for posting. Definitely an interesting list for sure, particularly with Age of Ultron so high (above all Captain America Movies) and Iron Man so low. While I still enjoyed the movie, Age of Ultron to me was somewhat of a big jumbled CGI mess. It definitely could of benefited from less CGI and a tighter story arc. Good to see a different take on these movies though. I really like seeing Avengers so high as it seems like many people have lost their luster to some extent for it over the years. However, to me, that movie is still solid and definitely groundbreaking for its time. Its rewatchability is super high. It seems like every time I see it on TV (a lot), I'll stop to watch some of it.

Haha, sorry guys (particularly big DC fans), as I just realized that maybe I went a little too far Marvel down the rabbit trail in a DC thread. Great convo stuff for the MCU thread for sure though.

I just saw Suicide Squad tonight and thought it was a decent movie. I don't understand all of the hate it's getting and the abysmal score on Rotten Tomatoes. It wasn't the next Citizen Kane, but that's not what I wanted either.

Probably fair. Being a fan, I both liked it more and hated it more for than a casual viewer.

I feel for you man with a lot of your thoughts. There is no doubt that the general public and critics obviously prefer the more light-hearted funny brand of superhero movies at the moment, which I do enjoy a lot as well. However, I do wish people would be more open to the idea of that way not being the only way to produce these movies. Personally, I love some of both. In fact, I have always liked the fact that DC was going a different, more dark and serious route to these movies, at least more so than Marvel has done, and I hope they continue that route. However, at the same time, I still want good movies. I definitely didn't not like Batman v Superman or Suicide Squad because they were too dark or too serious. I didn't like them because they were complete messes of storytelling and editing by a ship that doesn't seem to know where it is going right now. Therefore, I hope DC doesn't auto-correct their route too much, but just focuses more on giving the public good movies, whether dark, serious, or not, and I think the public will eventually come around. I mean the public loved the Nolan trilogy, they love the Netflix Marvel stuff, as well as others. Personally, I'm hoping Wonder Woman proves that as it still seems more dark and serious than a Marvel movie, but still looks awesome at the same time. I'm just hoping it actually comes through as that.

Again, I feel for you though. Not everyone needs to like the Marvel way of doing these movies and I'm a big variety guy where I want some of everything. Things get bad when they get too much of the same. There can be good movies on all sides of coins.

I like a variety too and I do love Marvel's movies when they're well done, but there is some silly brand loyalty going on with the reviews. Guardians of the Galaxy is my favorite hero movie of the past ten years. I enjoy it more than the Nolan Batman series even because it's so well done. The thing is Marvel has released some bad movies and they still get raves.

Thor 2 and Ant Man are just very bad movies by any measure yet they got these rave reviews because people have a sitffy for the brand. And I say this as someone with boxes and boxes of Marvel comics and outside of Vertigo I've almost never purchased a DC comic. Most actual comic book fans I know feel the way I do regardless of if they're DC or Marvel readers, it's more critics and people who have exclusively become fans of hero movies.

BvS and Suicide Squad are easily in the top half of the past 20 super hero movies released yet they are basically the worst reviewed. It's pure silliness. Everybody go ahead and go to Suicide Squad in theaters, it's great unless you thought it was going to be slapstick and 90 minutes of pure quips for some reason (but there are even some quips).
