Saw these articles and it took me back to the days of arguing with my friends over what was the best console. I am an unapologetic nintendo fanboy, so the answer is easy for me. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous of my friends owning Mortal Kombat in all of its bloody glory while I was stuck with gray blood and boring fatalities, but the collection of games on the Super Nintendo was far superior IMO. I'm sure some NHL 94 fans are going to come at me, so let's hear it.

I was born right around the time that these came out but we had a genesis at our house. First console I played on, just blew me away at some of the games. Loved the sports games as a kid and got into shining force when I was old enough to get it and that was amazing.

Gotta admit I’ve never played snes but can’t argue against that library

Testifying
SNES.
I loved how easy it was to roll your right thumb on the BA buttons. I specifically remember with some games, that was beneficial.

This isn't even a conversation. The game library of the SNES is far superior. It's possible that the Genesis was better technology, but it doesn't matter if you didn't have the games to play.

I had a sega gensis because 1) all my friends have a SNES, and 2) my dad said the sega was better technology.

But I kinda wish I had the SNES due to the games. I was also in elementary school at the time.

I always consider myself a Nintendo guy, but I’m mostly a Zelda guy. I did like some Mario games and Goldeneye for N64, for example, but I used to buy consoles for the Zelda games and that was basically it. The only console I got that was not driven by that franchise was the Sega Genesis and to me, it was the better system than SNES.

As @NorthCyd mentions NHL ‘94 was great, but I’ll go back to NHLPA (NHL ‘93), which set the standard for all hockey games. Sega also had PGA Tour II. SNES tried to copy that game and they butchered it.

SNES had arguably better traditional video games, but Sega beat them to just about every sports themed title (released them sooner) and did them better in just about every way.

I recently bought one of these new Super Nintendo consoles with pre-loaded games. Super Mario World, Starfox, Street Fighter, Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart, F-Zero, and more. Only game it doesn’t have from my childhood that I miss is NBA Jam.

I enjoy playing that a lot more than my PS4 (haven’t even felt the need to buy a PS5 honestly).

I loved Zelda and Mario on the NES, but I only had sports games on the genesis. College Football w Troy Davis, World Series Baseball, NHL, and the NBA Live games were awesome on Genesis.

I would say I'm a bigger Nintendo fanboy because of franchises. Mario, DK, Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, Kart, etc. Plus I think the best of the console of all time was N64 (******* mind blown).

When I owned one in that era I had a SNES, but was always so envious of the genesis. I think I really wanted it for Christmas, but my grandpa bought the SNES because I already had a NES.

Anywho, I wasn't a Nintendo fanboy to franchises until N64 like Ocarino of Time, Mario 64, 64 Kart, 64 Fox, etc, etc, etc. Golf, Tennis, Party, Smash. (And then buyed a Dreamcast in high school, well I was late).

On the SNES I really cared a bunch to Super Mario Land and MarioKart.

But the Sega was waaaaay better, and I played so much my friends in their basements. The catalog was so much better. Sonic 1/2/etc was so sweet! Sports! Comic Zone! DeCap Attack! Battle Axe! Skitchin (that we LOVED LOVED we LOVED rollerblade everyday)! Road Rash! Streets of Rage! omg so many that I would still do another ROM every so that I never use it on SNES again.

So Sega yes, that won. N64 end everything though.

The Zelda mention is funny.

Iirc the OG was one of the first 'big games' that was super popular early, then faded, and then had a revival of sorts like in 1991 or something. I just remember seeing its rankings go way up in Nintendo Power Magazine (which was ******* awesome, btw).

This thread has me in the feels.

A lot of people have brought up Zelda, and Link to the Past was an awesome game. Zelda is arguably the greates series in gaming. Same with Super Mario World and the Mario series. Then there is Super Metroid. It's a game that even today ends up pretty high on greatest games of all time lists. Metroid and Castlevania 2 started the Metroidvania genre, but Super Metroid was the first to perfect it. So many great games. I may have to break out the SNES emulator.

A Link to the Past (SNES) is one of the best Zelda games of the entire franchise. Unfortunately, for me and the sake of this discussion (from my POV), it came after Zelda II: The Adventures of Link (NES).

The OG Zelda was easily my favorite game. It might still be. There are better games now, of course, but none have the same sentimental value. The top view, open world was something nobody had really seen before. Zelda II was a game I just didn’t understand. I felt it took a step backwards. It reminded me of Pitfall from Atari days, and I just didn’t understand why they would make a game like that after the success of the original. I’d love to dust off the NES and give it another try, but I was late to SNES game because Zelda II made me think Zelda was a “one-hit wonder”.

Young me was obviously way wrong, but I do wonder if that has a lot to do with me leaning toward Genesis as opposed to SNES, and Zelda II wasn’t even SNES’ fault.

Check resale values of the systems and the games for those systems, SNES by a landslide
