Mason played well against Washburn. Let's not get carried away. He still has the same limitations as last year. Small and won't be able to drive and score again teams with good frontcourt players and isn't a great shooter.

Guard play will be KUs downfall again.

Selfs biggest weakness as a coach is on the offensive side of the ball. He doesn't mold his offense to the skills of his players or try to exploit mismatches. Just watch the Stanford game last year. Horribly coached game from Self.

Yeah, KU slid all the way down to 14th in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency last year. What a hack. He is a better defensive coach than offensive so I guess I'll agree it's his "weakness" but good grief. Funny than in college when players suck in a game it is the coaches fault but in the NBA when players suck in a game it is the players fault. Interesting phenomenon.

This. That is the one thing that Frankamp could do that Mason could not. He was more of a threat as a spot up shooter for any kickouts. With Mason, defenders will probably sag and dare him to shoot. Likely more double teams in the post using his defender. Unless he improved his shooting, this might be a weakness again.

Mason shot better from three last year than Frankamp. He'll be fine.

Frankamp was horrible as a spot up shooter last year. Where did you get that idea?

This thread reeks of desperation. The dude scored 2 ppg, didn't pass, and didn't defend. Yeah, I'm sure Self is losing tons of sleep over this

Mason isn't a great shooter but he's not nearly as bad as you make him out to be. In Big12 play he was 10-24 (.417). Now that's a small sample size and he won't shoot that well over an entire season but it does show that he's more than capable of knocking down open looks.

Hope he gets 35 mpg
I actually really like what I've seen in Mason this summer and his first exhibition game. Last year he played like a freshman a lot and his biggest issue was when he got by people (which he can do better than anybody on the team) he would try to finish at all cost even though the post was wide open. Seems to be passing better. I like his upside, pretty much can't teach quickness.

I don't think Frankamp is some stud or anything, I think at worst he's equal to Mason who apparently is going to carry a heavier load this year. Frankamp was being talked as an asset to the team moving forward by KU fans, now KU fans are pointing out all his flaws.

What did you see out of his this summer?

Frankamp would have been the same type of asset that Custer will be for ISU this year; a decent fill in for spot minutes against certain opponents but not someone that should be out there getting big minutes against any match up. That kind of player is totally replaceable at KU. His minutes will be doled out to three other guys that are hungry for them that can all capably provide what Frankamp would have done. I am 100% sure that Mykailiuk can be at least as good a spot up shooter as Frankamp and at 6'7" instead of 6'0", will be able to get open looks MUCH easier and will actually not be a giant hindrance on the defensive end. And trust me, KU fans were pointing out Conner's flaws while he was still a member of the team.

I'd be pretty bummed if Custer was no longer on the team

ISU wouldn't miss a beat without him this year.

Too early to tell, I think he'll contribute as a true freshman so I think he will help the team. KU is loaded with talent so losing Frankamp isn't going to destroy their squad but if it means Mason is getting more minutes than there will be another weak spot at guard again this year. You're down to pretty much rolling the dice that Mason or Graham can come in and be more productive than Tharpe was last year

Fred will play the percentages again and he'll get plenty of open looks. Just hope he doesn't shoot out of him mind like Tharpe did against us. Still pisses me off.
