We have nothing to lose in the Missouri game. Nothing. No one will expect us to go in there and win, so I'm just going to hope that it helps them figure some things out. Whether it's a loss by 6 or a loss by 30, it's a Power 5 season opener on the road, and I don't see that affecting our potential success in any way for later in the season.

A FEEL FOR THE WEEK AHEAD: It’s way too early to go on the record and make a prediction about Saturday (11:00 a.m. on ABC/ESPN2) but I don’t like the way that this game sets up for the Cyclones, who are 6.5 point underdogs to Oklahoma State. Iowa State just seems like a fatigued football team at this point in the season.

Who says this? This team is 6-3, playing at home on Senior Day. After all this is a top 25 matchup.... Have a little confidence in your team, believe me that locker room is upset after last Saturday....

On the Cyclone Sideline Show Monday evening, Matt Campbell said that the ball slipped from Kempt’s hand on the snap and he kept it instead of handing it off for security purposes.

Okay, that's smart by Kempt but why not play to win and go for a TD on 4 and goal? The defense is stopping them all 2nd half and the worst thing would be turning over the ball on downs 99 yards away from the endzone.

I was fine with taking the points as plenty of time was left. Hindsight is 20/20

This is a huge coaching mismatch, if we're anywhere near ready, we win.

Did you read the rest of what I wrote?

I think it's pretty obvious that I do have confidence in the team. Read the last section of the column. I'm not sure what bigger compliment I could have given them.

It is a fact though that this team is gassed. The Cyclones are fortunate they have stayed for the most part injury free because the depth isn't really there, especially up front offensively. Iowa State doesn't have the depth that the Oklahoma State's of the world do, which is a concern for me in the middle of November, when depth matters most.

I agree in the fatigue setting in for ISU.

The little nagging injuries start to pile up and depth becomes an issue.

I think any win over the next 3 weeks should be viewed as frosting on a surprising season. 2 would be incredible.

They may have peaked at their full strength through October and other teams will likely follow whatever WV was doing to keep the offense at bay and where to attack the defense.

Basketball may take me until about mid-December before I see what's potentially there...I didn't think ISU looked all that good until early-mid February of last season even with veterans/returning talent so this will be telling.

Almost impossible to say at this point. Missouri clearly has an amazing freshman class, but they were remarkably bad last year (and before). I really like our chances if the game is close at the 10 minute mark of the second half, as the pressure of the home crowd will revert onto them. I'm certainly not writing our guys off in any way. I'm just saying that this game will not determine the season at all. Far from it.

I don't think anything's changed with this team. They have always had a small window offensively. Even against Tech the offense sputtered in half that game.

The injuries to the line don't help but this is a grind it out, possession offense. They need to score early and keep the ball to limit other teams possessions. This stage of the season It's what they are. Just gotta go out and execute and take advantage of every opportunity because there won't be many.

I can't think of one single game, pretty much ever, in the non-conference that solely dictated the final product outside of maybe seeding in the tournament. If the goal is to simply make the tourney, as it should be for most decent basketball programs, which is what ISU is, it was met, and it was based on what happened January-March.

I was disappointed taking the field goal and not going for it.

So will our only basketball win be in South Carolina by a score of 9-0 because one of the teams forgot the Great Puerto Rico shootout was moved and forfeits?

Seriously, I think our basketball team will be fine. We know Young is better than he played, we keep hearing how Beverly is a good shooter and we also keep hearing that Talley is pretty good. Those three all played pretty badly. There's also a couple other players that we haven't seen yet so they could, and should, help.

Maybe a little bit of an overreaction on the basketball team considering there were only 7 players available. There are many reasons for concern but, as you say, Prohm has a knack for roster management and helping guys find their roles. Non-conference could be ugly, but I would be shocked if ISU doesn’t win a game in South Carolina next week.

As for football...I was game for kicking the field goal because with the way they were moving the ball in the 2nd half, I expected to be in that position again to be able to get a TD and take the lead rather than just tie it up.
