Coaches did we learn anything on our last possession......

The only lesson to learn from our last possession is “Don’t get the ball with 21 seconds left”.

I was thinking to myself during Baylor’s last drive that we should use our TO’s on that side. Then I thought we should have at least used one to ice the kicker. But it’s easy to do from the couch. I see the other aide as well.

That was one of the very few times where I might've went for icing. A freshman kicker who's never made a FG before going for the win with the game on the line.

Did Baylor lay back in that horse crap bend but dont break defense? No, they brought the house.
What did we do on their last drive? 3 man rush, drop back 10 and give up the 10 yard passes, and the game. No pressure on the qb..
Were you surprised by this? It's what Iowa State has done every game since the beginning of time. At least bring Vance on a blitz, damn!

Defense needs to learn how to get off the field on third down. But the real problem is on offense and I think play calling. How can we look terrible for 3 quarters and then when the defense knows we have to pass, score 21 points primarily thru the air? How come we can't/don't make these same play calls for all 4 quarters, if that is what our offense can do? What would the score be if we scored 21 each quarter instead of doing nothing for 3 quarters?

In case some of you haven't noticed, as this defense has evolved it has went from being a strictly umbrella over the top defense to a more risk taking defense. The principles are still there but we are being more aggressive with CB and S blitzes and man to man instead of just not letting anything get over the top of us as we did in the first year and most of last year.

I still think that the defense was impacted by the cumulative effect of the heat by the end of the game while Baylor was able to at least get out of the direct sunlight and have some mild cooling. It's not like our defense simply stood around and let them drive to the field goal.

I do think the next November game that Baylor visits Jack Trice (and it's cold, which for Baylor is under 50 degrees) that any available heaters on their side conveniently malfunction.

There's a difference defending the entire field with 8 seconds left as opposed to a couple minutes.

Like the Iowa game our D has a chance to put it away for us... that is the frustration...
The only reason the D has a chance to put it away is they had kept Baylor scoreless in the 4th up to that point getting a 4th down stop on one drive and a 3 and out (-5 yards) on another. If they can't keep Baylor from scoring on either one of those drives the point is moot.

There is some of this but we are getting burned more than we are getting to the QB. Dline needs to get more pressure.

Correct. Once they had a FG that wasn't all that long. We should have been using our TOs. We also should have been much more aggressive once they got inside the 40 in an effort to push them out of FG range. The downside is you give up a TD but I'm not a fan of putting the game in a kickers hands no matter which side you're on.

Our last possession as in the Purdy fumble? That was just Meeker and Good-Jones getting beat by both DE's for Baylor...

It seems like our DL containment in particular is terrible. Tend to get pressure and maybe a light hit, but then the QB rolls out away from contain and turns a 4-second play into a 14-second play our D can't hold forever.

I would of tried something radical and put in just d-backs and linebackers. It was fairly obvious that the d-line was gassed. Trying to run them on and off the field for a break probably added to their exhaustion.

The beauty of the 3 man front is obviously the extra guy in coverage. But also the extra guy from anywhere that can heat up the pocket. The pressure just didn’t get there on that last drive.

Well, just guessing but maybe 84???????

That's why I like corner blitzes in that defense. He has a clear path to the QB and it forces the other team to change their timing.
