If forced to hire one tomorrow to coach at ISU, who do you hire?

Hiring/extensions, aka betting on future success, is largely heuristic.

Honestly? None of them. McDermott is the only I would to maybe consider, but he couldn’t even sniff a tournament here, which is weird, since he had success everywhere else he went but never finished over .500 at ISU.

The only one who had any real success here was Prohm. Sure, most happened with Fred’s players, but one year was his guys. The others had good players, shoot, McDermott had guys who ended up getting picked 4th and 21st in the draft, and didn’t do anything with them.

You're trying to tell me Drake is a great basketball program? The MVC is nothing anymore
The MVC is a solid mid major. People who say "it isn't anything since ...... left" would also point to the Big 12 and say "It isn't anything since Mizzou, Nebby, Okie and Texas left". I would end with the Drake men's team is legit. They wouldn't win the Big 12...but they would be mid pack (7-12). They play great defense, control tempo, win the turnover battle, have a "go to" guy and exceptional coach.

McCollum definitely has them rolling. What is the best job in that league now in terms of facilities, local recruiting etc.? I've never understood how Illinois State isn't better. They have a legit arena with a big time feel to it and good h.s. players within a few hours drive from there.

Prohm was handed the keys to a Mercedes and crashed it into a tree. Morgan wasn't a good coach but he inherited a mess.

Good question; I would love to say UNI, but objectively it's just not true, despite having one of the best coaches with the longest tenure. Illinois State does have a lot going for it. Belmont also has good history and tradition, albeit mostly from a different and worse conference. Bradley's up there.

Went to St. Cecilia’s in Ames. He’s got four kids.

One of my sons had the Hoibergs sit by him at St. Thomas Aquinas his first week on campus

Cradle Catholic. Has talked about being an altar server
I do remember DMR did a piece on him three months before he ever coached a game at ISU in which he discussed how important his faith life was to him and how it was reflected in his coaching and all holy hell broke loose from the usual suspects who have a problem with that kind of thing.

I forgot about Missouri State too. They are pretty similar to Illinois State in terms of arena and somewhat local h.s. talent.

Drake is going to take a fair amount of the local talent too. Drake definitely has a ton of momentum behind them right now. Unfortunately I have a feeling they are going to be looking for a new coach again. I wonder if the now former coach at Utah Craig Smith would get a look if Drake indeed has an opening.

With the rumors of what Murray is putting into NIL plus the $80M arena renovation they're doing, it's Murray.

If I had to rank the league after Missouri State is gone:

Murray
Bradley
Belmont
Drake
Illinois State
UNI
Southern Illinois
Indiana State
Valpo
UIC
Evansville

That team was very talented, but I think the narrative of "he was gifted 6 NBA guys" is a bit overdone. These were Nader, Thomas, and Burton's stats in the seasons before they played under Prohm.

Nader and Thomas:

Burton:

Obviously all of them had talent, but that talent only started to turn into production in the season that was a "massive letdown." (Also, Naz was out after the non-conference, and Burton wasn't eligible until after Naz was out.)

Fun fact: Of Greg McDermott's four Iowa State teams, one had 2 NBA players on it, and three had 3 NBA players on them. Despite that, none of his ISU teams ever went .500, despite playing in a relatively weak Big 12.

Obviously Steve Prohm wasn't a good coach for this level, and perhaps he's primarily lucked into his successful seasons even at Murray. And there's no defending the end of his tenure (though the "2 wins" thing is also a bit overplayed given the fact that they only played 4 non-conference games). Regardless, I don't see any reason to treat him as essentially the devil of Iowa State basketball, especially when his tenure clearly did not forever doom Iowa State's program.
I will always stand by Prohm/his staff helped Nader earn a serious amount of money. He was looking like Enaruna under Fred.
