People would rather give their business to companies that support their alma mater. How is this so shocking? Isn't that the whole reason companies pay to sponsor University events anyways??? If the two companies are comparable, I'm going with the one that supports ISU. Don't see the big fuss.

And if two companies are comparable yet I prefer the products at the company that doesn't support my alma mater/supports the rival to my alma mater, I'm still going to go with the latter. Don't see the big fuss.

By the way, it's usually the ones that say "I can't believe you shop at name your store here - they support the Hawkeyes" that are the ones that make the big fuss about this issue.

If the companies are almost dead equal, I'd choose the one that supported my alma mater.

If the company that supported my alma mater totally sucked, and the other was amazing, I'd probably pick the other.

When in Ames, I felt Flying Burrito was superior to Panchero's. It had more to do with the food, but I was aware of Panchero's being from Iowa City. Maybe I prefered to give the Ames based operation my money, but at the end of day, I just like Flying Burritos better.

Down here in Des Moines, we have Bandit Burrito which just blows Panchero's (and Flying) out of the water. I haven't ate a Panchero's since I've lived here for this very reason. I have no idea if Bandit Burrito supports ISU, and I don't care because its delicious.

Now when it comes to gas stations, I can see choosing to avoid Kum & Go. Gas is gas. If you want food, QT and Casey's have better food. I stop at Kum and Gos quite a bit, but its more out of convenience. If you have a K&G, Casey's, and QT all in the same spot, K&G is my last choice.

You just love raggin on Panch dont you? I'll give you this, their franchises are very inconsistent with quality. Iowa City's Panchero's is the best by far, even when its 2am and there is a line out the door. Cedar Falls is pretty great too. Cedar Rapids has gone way down hill and I wasnt incredibly impressed by Ames. However, when I have been to Ames, they have the largest burritos of them all.

Not. A. Fan. I'm very passionate about my burritos.

I think half the reason I like the Iowa City one so much is that it's the only burrito joint there. Last few times I was in IC I went to Falbo's for late night munchies. Cedar Falls has Pablo's, which is phenomenal; Ames has Flying/Fighting Burrito which was unstoppable, but isn't up to its old standards; DSM has Bandit, which might be the best burrito in Iowa.

Panchero's just doesn't hold up to any of them in my mind. They have a great tortilla and after that it's pretty weak by comparison. The only place I prefer Panchero's is where they don't have any real competition.

Amen to that. Last time I was at a panchero's the beans were undercooked/soaked and the rice was also undercooked. I love a good burrito, but it's not panchero's anymore. One burrito lover to another, who's the best in ames. I don't get there to actually eat out very often. Requirements: big as hell, steak not burger, fresh guac not canned, sour cream, beans not to firm or squishy. Oh ya and the angrier the better.

Funny, my friend from Cedar Rapids and a UI transfer (currently at ISU) told me that all 3 of the C.R. Panchero's blew the Iowa City ones out of the water.

I guess that is why all of these businesses are still in business... personal tastes

I hate Iowa as much as the next guy, but damn.

Guess I don't know why this is so hard to understand. It has very little to do with hating iowa and much more to do with supporting businesses that support ISU. Also, it's not the primary reason for making a decision to buy somewhere, just something minor I keep in mind when deciding between two similar options.

I prefer Fighting/Flying Burrito on Welch. They don't do steak, but the beans and rice are right on, and they have the best salsa. The meats are all braised/shredded except the chicken, so you aren't getting burger, you're getting shredded seasoned beef roast. Pretty good stuff.

If you're down in DSM, check out Bandit Burrito on Merle Hay in Johnston.

Almost forgot - another reason why Panch is #1 in my book is "bobbing" the burrito. How other joints don't do this is beyond me. Eating a non-mixed burrito now, after I've had one with perfect ingredient distribution, doesn't appeal to me.
