Leaning more towards smaller town bars, but those are good suggestions.
Good food at Kippys I'm toldSome options i can think of not far off I-35:
Carney Tap south of Ankeny
Yankee Clipper in Ankeny
Kippys in Elkhart
R Place between Slater and Ames - Good service / Pizza / Cold BeerGood food at Kippys I'm told
Good choice, you won’t regret it. Really decent Midwest style pizza and a lively atmosphere. Iowa state students have discovered this place and it gets packed on a Fri/Sat night. I think it’s a lot of the small town kids that like that small town bar feel over Welch bars.R's Place looks like a good spot

R Place Fenceline or Flight. Get off at the Huxley exit and you could technically do them all if you wanted.
If only want one convenient stop I’d say flight then come up 69. I don’t recall if there is still a detour on 69 or not but it isn’t that bad.

Always thought it looked fun, but there's no way I would have even considered partying somewhere that required driving back in college.
