This thread is timely for us. We're about ready to need to buy something to step up from our Chicco key fit 30.

The KeyFits are great infant seats. We had one for each of our kids. The interchangeable bases were great - we had one for each car and my mom's, and so it made it so much easier for us with the carrier.

Man I kept my kid in that til he was 11 months old and busting out both ends. The ability to pop in and out of places was so convenient. Not an option with the convertible. I miss those days but appreciate the rise of curbside pickup.

We did the same! Our two were teeny tiny (still are!), so we stretched it out as long as we could, too! Man, it was so easy to clip in a stroller and take off!

We have a base in my vehicle, my wifes vehicle and grandma (emergency purposes). We also have to key fit 30s, since I drop off and my wife picks up and we can't leave the carseat there right now. So question, i haven't looked into them much but I'm assuming the next step up, you don't get the flexibility of bases and they're essentially an install and leave it type of deal?

You've got it. You CAN move them from car to car, but you basically have to go through a whole ordeal each time. Tightening the strap, maybe anchoring to the seat in front of you, adjusting angle, etc. It's far, FAR easier to get two of them! You could get a lesser model to keep in Grandma's car.

Or, depending on financial status of the folks involved, let Grandma get one for her car.

Is there a website that summaries the safety testing and ranks them?

Sort of! This is the best resource I know of - you'd likely want to look at convertible seats:

THIS PAGE (drilled down from that link) has different metrics compared, so that you can find out which is most important to you. If you plan to extended rear-face, that's a section. If you need three across or only have a little space, there's a section.

Seriously, thank you. I haven't had the time to dedicate to research all this myself. Our 7month old finally just slept through the night (7 hours) 2 nights a row now. Thank god.

Honestly... one that's cheap second hand and not expired. They all meet federal safety regulations... so no need to spend buku bucks. That said... I do try to get one with more padding for comfort.

I'm afraid we are too far away (youngest turned 13 this month) to be of any use in this conversation. They have changed so much. I remember when we thought it was the cats meow that we could get a stroller that the car seat carrier could clip into. The bases that buckled into your car so you could just clip the seat/carrier into the base were just coming out right after we bought ours.

I remember my Mom having something like this in her car. It was even blue, I think.

Oh, I hear ya there! The one we had could face both backward for an infant & forward for the toddler. There was a base that stayed in the car, anchored by the seatbelt. The carseat latched onto the base and had a flip up plastic bar so you could use it as a carrier for the infant. It wasn't strong enough to carry the toddler in it.

I think what we had would horrify modern parents. The carseats were less elaborate back then (late 70s), but we also didn't have to deal with airbags in every direction. We put the carseats in the front seat all the time.

Second son was born just as first son was getting too big for the car seat, so first born moved up to a booster seat and a regular seatbelt around him while second son inherited the car seat. When second son outgrew the carseat (he was around 3) we moved him to the booster that first son had already outgrown. We fought with him to stay in the booster...he would continuously unbuckle, climb to the center seat, and buckle himself in directly on the seat like his big brother. We finally decided it was better for him to stay buckled rather than climbing in & out of the booster.

Thank you for this. I was relieved to see the car seat we registered for is viewed favorably.

No need for thanks! I remember well the days of being so exhausted that you were lucky to do your job, let alone research anything. I hope your little one keeps up the overnights! It's life-changing.

It helps peace of mind to look and see that you didn't buy something unsafe or whatever!
