It was a good read. An element of our fan base is seeming pretty entitled if they want to complain about Georges to Barnes.

There are always a certain amount of people that will only voice opinions when they can complain. It is in their DNA.

Blum I think I found some footage taken after the Texas game of some of the complainers you're talking about.

With apologies to Mel Brooks and Blazing Saddles:

What did you expect? "Great game, guys"? "Way to handle a ranked team"? "I'm buying my Final Four tickets"? You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new midwest. You know... morons.â€￾

I can relate to the ******* and moaning. I found myself not even enjoying games this football season, imagine that, and really was suffering through games not enjoying them. I had to take a step back and just relax. I think, for whatever reason, maybe because a lot of us are alumni we get a little to emotional about the programs. CPR, Coach Fennelly, Coach Jackson and Fred are passionate about Iowa State. It is easy to get caught up in it.

It's appropriate to cheer and enjoy the games for the fans, but not to suffer and analyze every detail. That is more appropriate for the Coaches. I've taken a step back and would highly recommend it to others.

A good litmus test will be after the next game in Phog Allen. If we lose at KU and you are calling out players and Coaches for it you are not being realistic.

edit: Also, being a fanatic should mean cheering for your team and players not against.

I'd like to see all the loud mouth posters who freak out during and after games and post stupid ****, comment about this column, but I'm guessing none of them will acknowledge it.

Good read...brings us fans back down to Earth....I just keep thinking of the dark days....And remember where we have come from....Will we make the tourney this year? To how high of a seed will we have?

I did not make the connection in the style we play will allow comebacks...very good article.

Basketball is about runs, Fred says this all the time. The key is to build leads or cut into a lead with your run and minimize reduce the other teams runs. We played a great game against Texas because we exposed them and built an insurmountable lead that was able to withstand one of the best 8 minutes of shooting we'll see all year.

Also, dude, you only need one period.

I don't visit boards of other teams, but wonder if KU fans had a similar meltdown after surviving a scare at TCU last night or were just happy to get the W? I suppose every team has some element of this.

Some people definitely do take it over the line but this is also a place where we can discuss our teams pros and cons. It's not all rainbows and butterflies. Some people on the opposite side of the spectrum take it too personal when someone posts something critical of a player. Good article, but it goes both ways. We all want this team too succeed. Nice article Blum.
Watching ISU basketball is such a pleasure in comparison to 90% of the other teams in America's styles and should appreciate the motion passing and pace we get to witness 2X a week. Watching the WV/KSU mug fest and the OSU/Okie TCU/KU brick fest really illustrated that. All ended up being realitively close games at the end but I am guessing most fan bases would rather re-watch the ISU/UT game over their teams frustrating low scoring efforts.

Hoiball is exciting and the team is getting incrementally better at aspects each game, hopefully peaking in March. Let's just sit back and enjoy the ride. Remember last years team started off worse record wise at this point last year and put it together when it counted. CFH has this team going in the right direction.

I haven't forgotten how devastating it was to leave Hilton angry or heartbroken in the dark days of 2002-2010. The past 5 years have been amazing for basketball at iowa state. Not only have we had a solid team, we have a style the media loves, we have fun players, and we have a rockstar coach. I don't know how long it will last, but I don't want to look back when it is over and realize I didn't enjoy it.

I think Fred will use the Texas comeback as a lesson:

Always try to squeak a few more points onto one of your runs, because while you will be comfortable if your opponent comes back with an "X"-point run, what if they make an "X+3"-point run?

ABC. Always. Be. Closing.

I agree with Blum that fans can be outspoken in their own heightened expectations. But this is a team that had a players only meeting after a bad loss less than a week ago. To just eke out a win after giving up a large lead at home following the Lubbock embarrassment, you shouldn't be shocked that fans are on edge.

TCU is coming in, and from what I can tell from their game with KU last night, they are a team that moves the basketball, gets to the rim, gets after offensive rebounds, and doesn't quit when they are down. I expect a win in Hilton, but it's a recipe for another fan grumblefest. The Big 12 is going to produce close games every trip out. Fans tend to get uncomfortable with that!
