Somewhere in the U.S.
All I saw against Texas was that the Longhorns switched to mostly a 3 guard offense the last half of the 2nd half, and that made a major difference in their ability to score. I was a little disappointed that ISU did not respond to that better, but I don't think it means that every team in the Big 12 will suddenly be able to play 3 guards and beat ISU. Some play 3 guards, or go "small" now. It was a change for Texas that worked, and may work for them in the future. It will be interesting to see what they do down the road. I think when Texas plays with 3 bigs, the overall speed of their team and their offense is just too slow, especially against a team like ISU.

I'd like to see all the loud mouth posters who freak out during and after games and post stupid ****, comment about this column, but I'm guessing none of them will acknowledge it.

I don't have too big a problem with freaking during the heat of the game, even on line since people watching at home don't get to scream and yell at the game. Some of the after game dumb stuff, not so much.

A win is a win is a win. I don't care if its by 100 or 1. When you look at the W column at the end of the season, the spreads aren't there.

So some people on this board have a problem with premature expectation?

Good article, and how quickly some have forgot the GMac years with a boring style, no winning seasons and no tournament appearances.

Nice article Blum.
Watching ISU basketball is such a pleasure in comparison to 90% of the other teams in America's styles and should appreciate the motion passing and pace we get to witness 2X a week. Watching the WV/KSU mug fest and the OSU/Okie TCU/KU brick fest really illustrated that. All ended up being realitively close games at the end but I am guessing most fan bases would rather re-watch the ISU/UT game over their teams frustrating low scoring efforts.

Hoiball is exciting and the team is getting incrementally better at aspects each game, hopefully peaking in March. Let's just sit back and enjoy the ride. Remember last years team started off worse record wise at this point last year and put it together when it counted. CFH has this team going in the right direction.
Now we need to hit those free throws.

I agree with Blum that fans can be outspoken in their own heightened expectations. But this is a team that had a players only meeting after a bad loss less than a week ago. To just eke out a win after giving up a large lead at home following the Lubbock embarrassment, you shouldn't be shocked that fans are on edge.

TCU is coming in, and from what I can tell from their game with KU last night, they are a team that moves the basketball, gets to the rim, gets after offensive rebounds, and doesn't quit when they are down. I expect a win in Hilton, but it's a recipe for another fan grumblefest. The Big 12 is going to produce close games every trip out. Fans tend to get uncomfortable with that!

Unless we make 100% of our free throws there will always be a grumble.
As long as BDJ takes a fade away there will be a grumble.
As long as Georges doesn't score 30 there will be a grumble about butt shape and size.
As long as a team that focuses on Offensive rebounding and forsakes other parts of the game to do so, even if it benefits us beats us on the glass, there will be grumbles.

Basically, it's a lot like life, the things that you think are part and parcel to life in reality most people have no clue about. It's like Netflix, everyone knows about Netflix right? I think the results would surprise you. College Basketball, everyone on an internet message board partly devoted to the sport has a basic understanding of basketball right? WRONG.

Agreed on Fred's to do list and I am seeing signs of improvement. McKay's FT has been trending up recently. I'll trust Niang, Hogue and BDJ will go back to conference rates soon enough (glad Georges in particular, got the last FT down to extend the lead to two possessions, confidence builder). Monte, Naz, Abdel, and Matt are shooting fine.

I think CFH's immediate focus will be on the D though, if the team can defend for complete games like the way the team defended UT for the first 32 minutes, this team it could move up another level. Compared to the D we witnessed in the non-con, the difference is night and day IMO.

non sequitur. That has no bearing on this year's team. I hate when people immediately bring that up when someone complains about a game. Just because Fred has improved the team greatly, does not make them perfect or beyond reproach because GMac sucked.

Granted, some people just like to complain or take it to a ridiculous level. But too many people take offense to concerns about the UT game. It's legitimate to be concerned about the team taking a quarter of the game off, since this team has a history of not playing a full game.

Hoiball is definitely better than what we've had. It's a little hard on the old ticker with some of these close games, though :twitcy:

Was it really taking a quarter of the game off or the Cyclones not preparing for a team to go to a completely different style of play and personnel than they have played pretty much all season? If they had come out at the start of the game like that you could rest assured that Fred would have prepared a new plan for the team at half time. That and shooting out of their ***** resulted in a close win rather than a blow out win. It is difficult to totally change a game plan and implement it in the length of time of a timeout. Tweaks, sure; totally change not so much.

I'll just add my comment in here too to add to the discussion.

I sort of agree with the article, but I don't understand why Blume didn't mention the cumulative frustration from losing to literally one of the worst power 5 teams in the country. Fans get ticked off when the team admittedly doesn't show up to games they are supposed to win. Couple that with an 'almost collapse' down the stretch against Texas and you will get these types of responses. In addition, some of the comments Blum included in his article have good points. There is no reason that Monte Morris wasn't handing the ball against that press. We could have eliminated those 2 TO's down the stretch which immediately led to 3 pointers by Texas. That 6 pt turnaround would have turned a 3 pt win into a 9 pt win.

Now..with that said... "In Fred I Trust". I'm not going to pretend to be an expert in College Basketball strategy, but I can understand the frustration. The sky is not falling, but there are things to be concerned about (especially FT's). We need to watch out against TCU on Saturday, because if our team looks at the name on the front of their opponents Jerseys, they may choose not to play hard again leading to another terrible loss. In the Big 12 you always have to be ready to play...even against those at the bottom of the standings.

There are things to be concerned about with any team in the country. Kentucky almost lost to A&M and Ole Miss. These things happen. Blum's point is people are getting too worked up and you just need to enjoy these times because in the grand scheme of things worrying about FT shooting and losing to TT does nothing.

Blum says, "It is one thing to win games and make NCAA tournaments, but what endeared us all to the Hoiberg era in the first place was the entertaining brand of basketball."

Nope! What endeared me to Hoiball was winning games and making the NCAA tournament. I could give a rats *** about style and entertaining as long as there are results. Most people I see with critiques are just hoping the team improves for tournament time. I have great expectations and with this team they are not unwarranted. Some believe people are buying into the media hype. I see a team that has all the components to go to a final four and then it is anyone's to win. I won't lower my expectations because some have so little.
