Was it public knowledge that he was battling cancer? I honestly do not remember hearing anything about it.

Count me as one of his fans. He was eccentric, to say the least, but that's why he stood out so much. I enjoyed him calling both ISU games (as rare as that was) and when he called the UNI vs. Colorado game a few years ago that UNI won in Boulder.

And yeah...it's coincidental that he died along with the PAC-12, but I have to wonder if that might have been a small blessing for him.

A few years ago, Walton was a broadcaster for an Iowa State MBB game. He said something in his exaggerated manner like, "Dave, this is the best Iowa State team that I've ever seen." His partner asked, "Bill, how may Iowa State teams have you seen?" Bill deadpanned that "This would be the first, Dave."

Hmmmm. He didn't see Fizer smack UCLA around in the NCAA tourney? I highly doubt it was the first. Regardless, I liked him. He always gave me the impression he wasn't anyone's puppet. Especially when it came to his beloved P12.

I could be wrong but I feel this may have been the last time he called an Iowa State game. Either way it's nice to go down memory road and godspeed my friend...

I think he called some of our games in that Portland tournament maybe 2023

I couldn’t listen to him as a color commentator, but he was an important piece of the San Diego community and he will be greatly missed. He did a lot to benefit many, often with little fanfare.

In the 1973 NCAA Tournament title game, Walton scored 44 points, on 21-for-22 shooting, and had 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots. That FG preformance appears frequently on “unbreakable records” lists.

In Game 6 of the ’77 NBA Finals, his line was 20 points, 23 rebounds, seven assists and eight blocks.

I laughed when our fans were comparing Audi’s 18 for 20 ncaa game to this game since at the time it was pistol vs cc talk everywhere.
