1. El Fredo's in Sioux City really is pretty awesome, both the pizza quality and the retro 70s vibe. I've had incredible thin and deep dish living in Chicago for over a decade but I still would love some El Fredo's any time I'm back in Sioux City. Bob Roe's is pretty awesome there too. I like Jerry's but maybe that's more nostalgia because I grew up with it.

2. It's embarrassing that Iowa consumes and loves Taco Pizza like nowhere else on Earth. It's an ABOMINATION. People laugh at those European and Mideastern Pizza Hut commercials where the pizza has a cheeseburger or hotdog built into the crust...but taco pizza is just as F'd up if not more.

3. I'm torn on Great Plains. It's a gut bomb and has a higher cheese/dough to sauce/toppings ratio than any pizza should have...yet I STILL WOULD STUFF MY FACE WITH IT given the opportunity. The thin crust there is definitely good for just about anybody, the thick I understand the love it or hate it attitude, I just barely slip into the love it category.

I'm embarrassed for the other states/countries that don't appreciate a good taco pizza.

Once their tastes mature they'll come around.

No because if done right it is delicious but I am also a fan pizzas with odd toppings like Fong's crab rangoon pizza or Big Tomato's chili dog pizza.

I had no idea what you were talking about in the second part but I googled a few videos to see what you are talking about. I would probably try a cheeseburger or hot dog in the crust pizza.

Zenos in Marshalltown is the best in Iowa.
Vesuvius pizza in Ames is amazing as well.
Chain: Happy Joes taco pizza hands down.

I was glad to see they had some Toppling Goliaths beer on tap at Mabes. I love their Tsunami Dark!!

Its a match made in heaven. About twice a month, we'll call in a pizza at Mabe's and take it up to the tap room. I'm more of a Golden Nugget/Psuedo Sue fan, but Tsunami Dark has a big following up here.

Have only really had pizza in Ames or Marshalltown, and Zeno's gets my vote even though I'm a thick crust fan.
Husband and I tried Great Plains our freshman year - we were all excited to try it and never went back. Just didn't do it for us.

We've gone to Black Market a couple times and it's ok, but they need more sauce on the pizza. The chunky tomatoes are good, but a nice sauce would add some more flavor.

With all the food threads going around I thought i would ask where people think the best pizza in the state of Iowa is?

I love me some Old Chicago double deckeroni, but I think I might have to vote for Zoey's in Marion.

I've been somewhat of a pizza nut for decades. As i travel i always check out the local pizza joints. I'll uplift my answer by saying there isn't a chain out there that can complete with the mom and pop places. I agree this should be broken into categories.

Best chain: Paul Reveres ( I always eat in so it is fresh) something about their crust I really like.
Best mom and pop: lots of great options here. There were two places I loved when I lived in Cresco. Both were very good. Old George's (now closed) was the best in Ames (sorry, Great Plains...the pizza with hair in it was disqualified and isn't that great anyway). There is a great little place in Pleasantville that is worth stopping at. I do like RockPower in Des Moines.

Overall best? Mine! Lol

Never understood the Mabe's love. Not bad pizza at all but if I'm getting pizza in NE IA, I'm definitely stopping at TJ's in Clermont.

Wig&Pen was love at first bite for me. Would eat it every day if I could.
Also have only had it a couple time, but I'm a big fan of Coach's in West Glen.

First time I had Bacon Cheeseburger, it was at Pizza Ranch, so that will always have a special place in my heart, Although I think Casey's does it best right now.

Also if I am drunk, I skip pizza and go straight to pizza rolls. The way they strip the inside of your mouth of a couple layers of skin is only tolerable if you are hammered.

The supreme pizza from the Paul Revere's near Drake is some of the best pizza you can get in Des Moines. And they are open until 3am on weekends!

I also agree with those who mentioned Breadeaux. The pizza from Breadeaux on 50th in West DSM is good stuff!!

Bogie's on Hickman used to have amazing pizza. It's called something else now and the pizza sucks so I assume Bogie's shut down or moved?

But damnn that 'za was good.
