Highlife Lounge's fried chicken is tough to beat. The menu (and prices) are straight out of the 70's. Then head next door to El Bait Shop for Iowa's largest tap & a beer "flight." If you brought your bike, pedal over to Gray's Lake, Water Works Park, Orlando's, or even Cumming Tap if you're feeling ambitious.

HIDDEN GEMS, fun topic. Here are a few of mine

Fat Tuesdays - Southern, creole food on SW 9th just north of Army Post. Seriously, the best collard greens I have had in my life

Henry J's Tacos - Also on SW 9th, not far from Lincoln HS. Great Tacos, sides leave a bit to be desired

Angelo's Pizza - Now in the cursed building on 8th St in WDM, jusst south of 235, great pizza

Cooper's on 5th - tiny little bar/resturant in Valley Junction but tremendous food

Tacopocalypse - Now with their stand alone shop in the East Village. Go for a brunch, you will love it

Francie's - Off of Fluer, north of the airport. Not sure this counts as a hidden gem because it is pretty well known, but it's tucked off the road and tough to see. Great atmosphere for a few drinks and even better bar food.

Looks like some southSIDE love going on there... Cheers to that, its where I live too... Might as well add Barattas & Mullets too.

If you like sushi try Akebono 515, is has the former owners of Taki. They sold that place 5 yrs ago, their non-compete has expired... Dudes love the Henessy. They order more than about anyone in the country but dont sell much as they use it to bring you back again & again!

Agree on Orlandos, great pizza, in house made sausage and the best little salads in town

I have a hard time calling any Jethro's location "hidden" anymore

Tacopocalypse, Tacopocalypse, Tacopocalypse. That place is fantastic. Loved his stuff when he was just catering bike events, and then over break I was able to go to his east village location a few times. Just freaking awesome!

My favorite Saturday ride since I live in Norwalk, is riding to the trail from my house. Hit Cumming tap, ride to Confluence, and then to Tacopocalypse.

Another hidden gem is B&B Grocery..

Forget the previously mentioned places for wings. All you need to know for wings is Gerri's Tavern by the fairgrounds. Very much a hole in the wall, but the wings are phenomenal.

When I lived in DSM, I tried to make it Gerri's about once a month.

I never ordered anything but the wings. They're exceptional.

Manhattan Deli on Ingersol. The Vito's are the best!

I used to work in that neighborhood. Got in for lunch about once a week. I probably miss Manhattan Deli more than any place in Des Moines. Just can't find a deli sandwich that good out in the boonies.

Perusing this thread, it's easy to see why I was heavier while living in Des Moines than anywhere else I've lived. Just a plethora of great food for a city it's size.

I had some good biscuits and gravy recently at PerkUp Café in Urbandale.

It is a tiny place though, so don't go with a big group and expect to get seated.

My Girlfriend's mom makes some pretty good jalapeno cheese and potato soup. And I never have to stand in line for it so I am going to guess it isn't that popular.
