I'm surprised that Cybsball20 hasn't mentioned Tim Vangelder. Tim was a quarterback and a pitcher for us. Ego and confidence was not a problem for Tim, as he knew we were going to the Orange Bowl (obviously we didn't make it). He threw hard in both sports; unfortunately only in baseball could someone catch him consistently. Eppie Barney (cousin to Lem Barney of the Detroit Lions) was his primary target but Eppie could only catch the ball if you threw it away from him by five feet. If you hit him in the chest, no catch because he would concentrate on the run. Eppie hated to get hit which made him an extremely elusive runner but it was a real liability when playing as a defensive back during the days of two-way ball.

I think Tim did play a little pro ball but ended up as a sportscaster on TV in St. Louis -- if I remember correctly.

Great reference! Oberg may not be in the top 3, but he shouldn't be forgotten. He was the field general for a very potent Iowa State offense back in 1989, and put up pretty impressive stats himself, as I recall. He had a monster game against Oklahoma when the Cyclones almost upset the Sooners, 43-40, in Ames. That team as fun to watch. Walden's best team at Iowa State, by far.

I was sitting in the endzone in Sewer City when we almost upset the Hawks. They were up 7-3 and with 2 1/2 minutes left we got the ball back and Oberg marched us down the field and we could feel a win. Then he got a little to eager and threw an interception I think on EIU's 10 or 15 yrd line. He was the man in that game and us losing 7-3 was a whole lot better then the 63-7 games we Cyclones were used to watching before that for so long....Ah the memories

Drew Tate....I mean Brad Banks....err, Jake Christiansen... Oh, wait - ISU QBs, not Iowa QBs that melted down against us...

They may not have suited up for ISU, but I would definitely consider them assets in the ISU victories.

Here's my ratings
1. George Amundson-took Iowa State to Liberty Bowl, runner up in Heisman, drafted 14th in the first round. All American
2. Seneca Wallace-led Iowa state to multiple bowl games, brought ISU back from the dead, drafted 4th round 110th
3. Sage Rosenfelds-draftet 109 in 4th round
4. Bret Meyer-all time passing leader, led Iowa State to bowl game

I would have put David Archer as #3....

You can make a case for Terry Rubley. Had good game management and accurate passer, although he was surrounded by studs (where have the Iowa boys gone??) and we mostly ran the ball. The last Iowa State quarterback to win in Lincoln, NE (and I was there ;) and an Iowa High School Quarterback from Davenport to boot. I would put him behind Amundson, Carlson, Seneca, and Sage, and Archer. Maybe slightly behind Stanley but ahead of Meyer.

From Obert Tisdale forward, I go with David Archer as the best overall qb and Chris Pedersen as the most under rated and under appreciated.

if i had a 1-a and a 1-b i would use it but imo its...
1. Seneca Wallace- no doubt the most talented qb ever and lead a team ranked #9 at one point... i just chose not to remember the rest of that year
2. Sage Rosenfels- plain and simple brought ISU back to respectibility
3. Bret Meyer(b/c of stats)- all time passing best and won a bowl game, just had a knack for under performing
