It was Waye Terry. Didn't he end up having some potentially serious spinal problem?? Didn't that cause him to stop playing?

I have to agree with Lobo. Amundson was not only a great quarterback, he was a great running back. He was our first 1,000 yard rusher with reduced number of games played back then. George to Keith Krefle (TE that went o to play for the Philadelphia Eagles) over the middle was almost a sure thing although it didn't work for the two point conversion that would have won our first bowl game. He was truly a great athlete.

Seneca may have been nearly as good an athlete but he couldn't keep the team together as well IMO.

Sage may have been as good a team leader as anyone but did not have the physical capabilities of either George or Seneca.

Dean Carlson was a great QB ( first ever ISU bowl team,) but I wonder if he would have started if ISU didn't need Amundson as a RB that year

Dean was very good and I think he would have started over George. They were just trying to ge their best athletes on the field at the same time and this may have been the best ISU team ever.

Not only the best ISU team ever but quite possibly the best coaching staff.

You guys forget about Brett Oberg?????? Mr California running the option...

Them were the days...
Great reference! Oberg may not be in the top 3, but he shouldn't be forgotten. He was the field general for a very potent Iowa State offense back in 1989, and put up pretty impressive stats himself, as I recall. He had a monster game against Oklahoma when the Cyclones almost upset the Sooners, 43-40, in Ames. That team as fun to watch. Walden's best team at Iowa State, by far.

As we note Cyclone QB's who played in the pro's it should be noted that Buddy Hardeman suited up with the Redskins for a year or two (at running back I believe) and Alex Espinoza started for the Chiefs in a strike year.

Oberg has the highest career completion percentage in ISU history at 59%.

Archer had probably the longest pro career although some of that was in the USFL. Sage may eventually last longer.

Amundson was also one of the greats but he does have one negative all time mark, most interceptions in one year at 22.

David Archer
Then Seneca

For those I saw and remember anyway.

Alex Espinosa had the strongest arm. Just was never on target. Dude threw the ball a hundred miles per hour even on screen plays.

Todd Dozen played briefly in the NFL for the Dolphins as a utility player WR/QB via the arena league I believe

Senaca'a team falling apart in the 2nd half of 2002 was because of a tough schedule (played Texas, OU, and KSU in a row and never recovered from it, although they played Texas very well) and a lack of OL (he was running for his life!)
