I have a potentially strange question today fanatics...

What beer goes best with goat? My family is roasting a whole goat this summer, sort of for my birthday, and I am really curious if anyone here has tried it before and what beer(s) may go well with it. I'm not a huge beer snob, but would like to have something past the Busch/Bud/Coors family of beers.

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest an ale. I'm partial to Goose Island's honker's ale which is readily available in Iowa.

I dont alway drink beer with my goat. But when I do I drink Shiner Bock, Fat Tire, or Spotted Cow. For some reason I think that is a great beer with BBQ.

Stay thirsty my fanatic.

Never tried goat, so I'm not sure what it tastes like. A lot will come down to personal preference. For example, I'd have no problem with Shiner but Fat Tire wouldn't be a good pick for me.

At the end of the day, I think you could get just about any beer and be happy with it as long as it's one that you liked anyway.

Its got a great flavor, but it goes down easy and would pair well with barbecued goat.

My go-to "accessible" beer is Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Not sure how well it matches up with goat, but it's pretty much my main tailgating beer.

Usually darker meat you would go with a darker beer. I'd go with a brown ale or stout of some sort. Newcastle would be a great choice for something easy to find. I'd suggest Bells Kalamazoo Stout if you can get it.

Having been to a party where goat was served, I suggest a plan b or maybe just a bunch potato chips. Or drink copious amounts of whatever beer you choose before you eat.

I agree, a brown ale would be a solid choice.

Would agree that something like a Newcastle Brown Ale would be best. This beer has a smooth flavor with just a little bite. It won't shock the Coors Lite people at your party. This beer will be perfect with Goat (which tastes like chicken. Right?)

Try these available at your local Costco. One is sure to go with the goat.

Most people have a cake on their birthday. Having a goat is certainly an interesting choice.

Cosco has their own beer line? How is it?

Personally, I love the Amana/Millstream beers:

Surprisingly not bad for the price. I believe they have a brewery on each coast brewing it for them. Mrs. Velo brought some home when we were hosting a party a few years ago. I told her that we would be the laughing stock of the neighborhood if we served it. I just about took it back but I relented and it turned out to be not too bad. Originally they had a German lager that they apparently replaced with the IPA and a Hefeweizen that they replaced with the Belgian White. I'm not a huge fan of the Amber and I have yet to try the IPA, but I really enjoy the others. You have to buy a case that has a six pack of bottles of each of the featured varieties.

I was reading a magazine soon after that was listing their picks for best beers at each of a few price categories and was surprised that they listed the Kirkland beers as the best of the cheap beers. Who knew!?

I am a fan of everything that has been suggested so far. This actually just made the decision harder, because now I have way more options than I first thought...

Fat Tire seems to be a pretty popular choice, although I am very interested in the Shift someone mentioned. Not sure I've ever had that, is it a seasonal? Anyway, thanks folks, I'll post pics next month.
