Not sure.
Campbell hasn't failed at this point. He walked into a train wreck.

At the same time, I'm not sure that the coach exists who can make this place successful in the college football. It might not be a JP problem. It might just be that it can't actually happen.

This is the Greatest Post of All Time esp...."It actually cant happen"....add here at ISU and thats a Cold Hard Shot of Reality............

Reality ....ISU has been a basketball school since the arrival of Johnny Orr and great football players DO not play for basketball schools...see Kansas for a reference to football mediocrity

What more do you want JP to do? Fans were restless with Mac, so he hired one of the best coordinators in CFB, national assistant coach of the year that led a national championship defense and had ties to talent-rich areas. Then he gave that coach everything he wanted to help him be successful. But didn't work.

Hired promising assistant with ISU ties. Firey guy who the players would love. That staff had a young up-and-comer, genius OC and sage veteran DC. JP gave him all he could to help him win - indoor practice facility, football-only building, updated stadium.

When it was clear it wasn't going to work, he hired one of the best young coaches in CFB, a guy who was going to be a candidate for a few jobs. Then he basically had given that staff everything he can to help them get it turned around.

Again, what else do you want from JP? What AD has done it better?
I know you didn't mean it, but your post made my sinking feeling even worse.

Except Kansas has played in a BCS game and is also much more successful at basketball.

Actually, I take that back, Lanning's poor play was the difference in the game. The fumble at the 15, 2 INTs, and that debacle safety play.

Yes, our OL sucks, but that was the difference in the game.

Lanning with 2 INTs and a fumble, and a pretty pathetic safety that he had plenty of time to find something to do with the ball.

"But he had 3 TD's"

Butler and Lazard made unbelievable plays for those TD's.

In the time JP has been here our fan base has grown as have our ticket sales. He has done a good job at selling the program and has been instrumental in upgrading our facilities, including the SEZ which many of us on here thought would never happen. When JP is no longer doing those things then you can discuss letting him go. Also, for as many stupid coaching mistakes that Campbell's staff had you have to be a special kind of stupid to have already written them off for long term success.

We lost to uni. Not bama.

When this program has rid itself of the mentality of losing close games then the ship will turn...we lost to a top 5 FCS school that just wanted the win more..Put Campos. Dunning, Burton in this game on the Oline and we run the ball well and don't have to rely on JL to throw to win...but those guys left the team or are out..enter 3 brand new Oline who just played their very first Football game outside Hs and Juco and you get that result.

The culture of losing and losing close games is so deeply imbedded in existing players it is nearly impossible to draw it out and turn it around...

I don't think the offensive play calling was that good but that may have more to do with a new system and not wanting to overload Lanning..it looked like we ran maybe 15-20 diff plays that's it.

Wts...this is in no way Campbell fault...this is a first game of a coaching change with a ton of new players playing..Farley has been at UNI for decade or more..also...if we had lost this game playing nearly mistake free with no turnovers then I'd be very concerned..take away 2-3 of the unforced turnovers and half the stupid penalties and we win that game comfortably honestly. But it's part of the game.

A culture change of not losing doesn't happen in one game against a very good FCS team..look st TCU..they were in a dog fight with South Dakota st at TCU...SDST put up like 45 pts vs a top 10 defense folks.

App st should have beaten top 10 Tennesee..Heck Miami of Ohio looked better than Iowa the last 2 and a half quarters and Miami Ohio is not good.

Always said Nick Saban would struggle to win here. After 30 yrs of attending, I'm convinced our ceiling is averaging 5-7 wins per year and no coach is going to change that fact.

We gifted UNI this game. As Sage was saying on the broadcast, our execution stunk. Throw in the stupid penalties & Lanning's unforced, mental TO's, & you get this outcome. Most all these things point to coaching. UNI did not force the fumbled snap nor the 2nd to last INT. Throw in the TO to ice the FG right before half & there you have it, mental mistakes galore. This UNI team was not that good. They do a great job of dictating the game & they made our QB be the 1 to beat us on 1 side of the ball & also were able to use their QB on the other side to seal the deal. We didn't force him to throw enough, but with short fields he didn't have to as much

Matt Campbell didn't suddenly forget how to coach.

Especially when Campbell while still coaching at a MAC school beat essentially this roster last year.

This roster has talent at skill positions but its OLs and DLs and LBs are train wrecks. This isn't like basketball where you can build a competitive roster in one offseason with transfers. This is going to take a few years to build starting lines and depth.

To elaborate on this, Warren had 30 yards rushing last night. He didn't forget how to rush the ball over the offseason; he had absolutely nowhere to run last night. In fact, the team had a grand total of 51 yards rushing last night. That's on the OL.

To elaborate further, we'll never know what kind of a QB we have in Lanning as long as he only has 2 seconds and 2 looks before he either has to throw up a prayer or take off running. When Lanning actually had some time to find receivers he hit Lazard and Butler with amazing TDs. Not saying Lazard was great last night, because he wasn't. Even though the first INT was on whichever receiver ran the wrong route on a timing play, the second was just bad form. But the guy was running for his life all evening and had little time to throw. Lanning may not be a good QB, but he got zero help from his line all evening.

Even further, the front 7 gave up 232 yards rushing last night. To UNI.

Until the lines get fixed we will continue to watch terrible ISU football. Unfortunately, that is something Campbell can't fix overnight - it will take a few years.

I think he lost about 50 yards to penalties (Warren).

I would like him to hire someone who can beat FCS schools. At the end of the day JP has hired 3 football coaches. The first two were failures. If the third doesn't work, then what? Let the guy with a record of failed coaching hires continue to be the decision maker?

Maybe that isn't a JP issue, is my point. He doesn't actually coach. His job is to hire a quality candidate and give them everything they need to succeed. When has he NOT done that?

I will say this, we need to stop playing UNI. They evidently are not a guaranteed win. But they are an embarrassing loss.

Why pay to get embarrassed?

What's crazy here though is that if Campbell gets a win in Kinnick next week, he'll be immoralized and last night's game will nearly be forgotten. Long season folks
