Anyone remember their college move-in experience?

The week before classes start is the best week of the year. You get to see all your friends again, no classes, great weather, and lots and lots of drinking.
Yep. I move back in tonight to a house I got with a bunch of friends. I could not be more excited.

I probably walked by your room 800,000 times. You never tried to light a girl on fire with a lighter, by chance? And then go back to trying to light the wall?

I think it was the first section going toward Godfrey that would smell.

i do remember that the east half of the floor was called ghetto stange and i could see someone playing with fire down there

we also had a haunted microwave in our den

Feels like yesterday, but it wasn't. My parents were heading to Minnesota for vacation, and were anxious to hit the road. They were gone before I even unpacked one thing. Two years before when my older brother moved in, they spent all days in Ames. Middle Child, only daughter syndrome I guess. Freeman Hall, Busse. Old RCA was so cool back then.

August 1966 into Friley, Stevenson. Likely was a Tues. followed by a lot of orientation stuff back then. Very hot, no AC, no window fans. No such thing as lofts - had to request bunk beds if desired. We had a larger 3-man room. Classes started following Mon. - Chem 101 at 8:00 AM. Dining hall also opened on Mon., first day of class. Breakfast was pancakes, my first take on dining hall food - wasn't too impressed.

Unbelievable the helicopter parenting these days.

We secured moving vehicles and did it all ourselves back in the day. no way in hell did we have mommy and daddy there.

And the parents that escort their kids to the college bookstore and hand-hold them through the entire process? LOL
We would be HORRIFIED showing up at the bookstore with our parents... LMAO

Times have changed I guess

Left Ohio about 6am. I had one box of clothes, one box of non goods, and a futon. The move in crew was waiting for me on the top floor of Roberts by the time I could even get my key. Hugged my dad one armed and off he went to the Des Moines to go to the state fair the next day.

That night I went around to the floor meeting the guys. Went to a party and did that classic get a gf within the first month. (At least I wasn't one of those guys that had a gf still in High School). We dated a year but turns out she was a cheating *****.

?? What year did this begin?

i am now disappointed that I could have been in the exclusive club of cowgirl's friends. our door was always open so I'm blaming you for not saying hi on your way by

I'm trying really hard to remember some of the rooms I would pass to see if I can get yours - so you were in the section next to Anthony? I vaguely remember one room on the.....UDCC side, so north? that was always open and had some type of fancy screen setup. That's the only one I can recall.

But to be fair, some of your people tried to set me on fire so I didn't spend extra time in those hallways, lol.

The thing that will always stick out to me is the tremendous awkwardness of the first few days/nights with a new roommate. Aside from a few phone calls organizing who would bring what, I hadn't met my roommate at all. I'll always remember how strange it was once you were moved in, everybody left and you just kind of had that "well, what the hell do I do now" feeling.

Where they love the governor
Was that the floor with one room that had the elevator shaft going through it?

Yeah, that room was right across the hall from me. On the plus side, the dude who had it didn't have to share. The downside, of course, was that there was room for a bed, a dresser, and a desk, and nothing else.

I remember within the first week, we met a guy on our floor who must have been in his 30's (although he was a foreign student) who had turned one of the Friley room closets on its side and with it's back to the door and converted it to a bar. ******* amazing! He missed a lot of classes...

Not sure, but it was around when I was a freshman in 2010. I did it in 2011, too. If you volunteered for it, they let you move in early (if you were living in university housing) for free, and you got a coupon for a free large from Jeff's Pizza. Made moving in a ton easier for everyone.

When we drop our first kid off in about 20 years, my wife and I will probably wonder around campus and campustown and not help them unpack. Maybe come back in a couple hours to say bye

All I remember is my mom trying to unpack everything for me and trying to figure out where all my **** was for the first week, my dad desperately trying to get her out of my room and get me some space to settle in, and awkwardly meeting my roommate (which pretty much set the tone for the one year I knew him).

we didn't have a fancy screen setup. i was in 1110 first year and 1106 the final two years. both on the UDCC side of the hallway on your way out the north door of Friley

But to be fair, some of your people tried to set me on fire so I didn't spend extra time in those hallways, lol.

if you can't take the heat stay in the kitchen...especially during ISU games (hope you were the one with that problem during the season)

Mine was very hot, but all in all pretty easy. I had a friend buy me a handle of vodka the day before so the second the parents were gone we got started on the evening. Had a blast the first night out and met some people I'm still friends with today. Also, I learned a valuable lesson for parties, wear something people can ask you about (cubs hat, funny t-shirt, etc.) so theres an instant conversation starter.

I helped move my now wife into (and out of) 4th floor Friley 3 years straight, while my room was first floor Friley (Stange). Should have switched rooms to cut my stair exercise down
I lived in Stange, 81-85. Had to live in temp housing at the south end of Friley first. Then got moved to Chamberlain. Finally, my brother's roommate moved out and I took his spot in Stange.
