Valentino's had a place there in that time frame.

I always thought there had been a Valentino's at one time, but I asked the manager of the newer Valentino's out in North Ames if there had ever been one in Campustown... but he said no.

He was a younger manager so he probably was born sometime in the 80's.

As far as I know, cheapest pizza in Ames right now is $5 Little Caesar's. For delivery you can get a couple of larges from either Papa John's or Dominos for about $7.50 each if you have the SAA discount, or two mediums from Pizza Pit for $6 each.

Up north
Still is there. Corner of Lincoln Way and 6th Street.
Closed my junior year I believe (2009-2010). Jeff's Pizza's smotherella stix fill the void left by pokie sticks juuuuuuuust fine. And Jeff's Pizza's actual pizza is 10x better.

Completely agree about Jeffs and their deal on Tuesday(buy a pizza and get an order of Smotharella sticks the same size for free) was very comparable to Gumbys deal. When Jeffs opened it did not take very long to see the writing on the wall for Gumbys.

This thread is bringing back memories from my days at ISU (99-01). Home Team was so thin it was like eating cardboard covered with marinara sauce but man was it cheap. I remember during finals week, they'd literally give away pizzas. My roommates and i got the 3 mediums for $10 deal at Domino's a lot...I'd always pay the extra dollar to get deep dish, good stuff

Tell me about it! You see the places where the kids live now a days. Students thinking nothing of paying $500 a month rent. When I was in college $500 a month rent meant, you better find 6 guys to live with ya.

There is almost nowhere in Ames that you would pay $500 a month for rent if you had two roommates, or even one. The only place non university related I could think of that is a normal-ish apartment is The Grove. I have paid $295, $300, and $300. Not even close to $500.

Iowa City on the other hand, those are some outrageous prices.

I worked at DaVincis in 03 when I got to school. Great job, met a lot of fun people. Worked the night of the Veishea riot. Watched it all unfold from inside the closed restaurant with the night manager.

Pizza was good, but it was at a premium price. Subs were awesome, and the garlic cheese rolls were the best. One of the few places in town that made a real cheesesteak sandwich, too.

Family owned place with stores in Lincoln and Omaha. Ames was always the orphan store. The building was an old service station. Still had gas tanks in the ground. They were monitored for ground contamination, and were getting closer to the allowable limit. Big bucks to dig those out. The place was also in need of a major overhaul. The family got together over Christmas and decided to shut the Ames location down.

I never got why DaVincis wasn't more popular, sounds like that building had major issues nobody would ever have guessed. It was probably my favorite pizza in Ames and easily my favorite subs. It wasn't that outrageous on price, I'd still buy pizza from there once a month or so myself, just not the "nightly" meal that Dominoes 3 for 10 was for a lot of college kids. I wonder if they'd have made it more of a bar atmosphere, Pizza Pit has been there forever and their pizza is really expensive for a college town.

Any Great Plains fans on here? I always wished they were in Campustown instea of on Main, but I wonder if that would ruin the vibe?

Great plains is one of the best pizzas in the world, but probably too pricey for campus town.

Back in the 90's, there was a place in Ames that served an upside down pizza. It was baked in a bowl, then flipped over and tapped.out onto you plate. Does anyone know what restaurant that was?

I've had pizza in every corner of the globe. Chicago to NYC. Naples to Rio. But I tell you what, after a couple of beers, there was no pizza better than Home Team Pizza. RIP.

I seem to remember my uncle telling me there were over 25 places that served pizza in Ames when he was a manager than owner of his place on Welch. Does anyone remember Green Pepper followed by Thumbs Up?

Don't overlook Hy-Vee (east and west)! Best $5 pizza in town.

Are you serious? It closed down 3-4 years ago. There have been many subsequent posts that claim Jeff's Pizza has great cheese sticks that rival Gumby's.
