i remember hearing somewhere that their HS football team is supposed to be loaded with talent this year. How do they blow a 17-0 lead by giving up 30 unanswered to an average-at-best Johnston team?

EXCELLENT QUESTION...wonder if we'll ever get a reasonable answer (excuse).

I'm trying to figure out where you "heard" (imagined hearing) that they were going to be loaded this year. I don't know who would claim that after they lost Sam Tim to UNI, and their starting QB and leading WR and then don't have a single returning starting LB. Basically they're returning Kohler and a d-tackle.

"Ames is in a similar situation, having to replace eight offensive starters and five defensive starters from an 8-4 squad that advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 4A playoffs last season.

The Little Cyclones will be starting a new quarterback, senior Will Frantzen, and a new No. 1 running back, junior Corey Thompson, in addition to an entirely new linebacker corps."

I don't quite get why you 2 are calling out the hometown HS out on a Cyclone message board, unprovoked.

I'm not sure that Johnston is an "average-at-best" team. Coach Brian Woodley has done a remarkable job of building the Johnston program and, playing in the toughest division of the CIML, has consistently won. I'm not sure what last night's game says about Ames just yet, but I think it's safe to say that Johnston will be a force this year.

Also...there are at least three Johnston grads on the ISU roster this fall.

Average at best? Look at Johnston's record the last 3 years and tell me if they are average at best

And I don't believe that they have won a playoff game yet. Not to surprising as they struggled at first when joining 4-A about 8 or 9 years ago.

Looked like Johnston started the wrong QB. As soon as their second-stringer came in, the Johnston offense - and the game - totally turned around.

No, but they should have had a chance in 2007 to do some damage, but they got the shaft with the 16 team playoff system but thats water under the bridge. And its quite unfair to say that johnston is average at best... I think by now they should have earned respect from other teams. Will they win the central? Most likely not, but they will still be competitive down to the end.
