Supposedly if the HD signals are 720p, you can have two simultaneously. ABC/WOI is 720p, so theoretically they could do it. Knowing how good WOI is at getting their **** together, however, I doubt our game will be in HD.

WOI often "forgets" to switch to 16 x 9 HD and their SD is awful. I don't think WOI has 5.2 up and running. At least I've not seen it available.

I heard a rumor that KETV in Omaha was showing the ISU game on a different channel similar to what WOI is doing...does anyone know anything?

I believe it will be just like WOI: 6.2 or 7.2 over the air on HD, That would make sense.

It's good to have publicity when your program has a fighting chance of looking good - it's not good to be on national tv when you're going to get stomped on and ***** slapped.

Not to mention, WOI is about a tenth of the station as KCCI or WHO when it comes to signal quality. I love watching ABC FB in HD on Saturday, but even then it's a very weak signal and they never come through with HD for anything ISU or Big 12. I like that Walters is fair towards ISU, but overall that station is so out-dated and mediocre that I hate to think of how much worse it will be after Feb and the DTV transition when their signal will be even weaker for most central Iowans.

There goes my great plan to sneak upstairs at the megamall while my wife shops and watch the game at Hooters. I'm guessing they won't have rabbit ears for a second ABC channel for me.

Gives you a good segue to have them kiss your rabbit.

On second thought, maybe not.

Why assiume? It could easily be that they avoised upgrading old equipment knowing that they had to invest in DTV--and spent all their money on the upgrade there.

It's not like Mediacom, which has no money for upgrading dated equipment. WOI (and it's sister stations) had to make the investment, by law. If I were the owner, I'd see that as such an opportunity. Put off the upgrade until you have to.

What I mean is that WOI is one of only a handful of stations across the country that went the very low-end road of switching to low-VHF which is very difficult to get with all but the big roof-top antennas. Most stations are switching to VHF-Hi or UHF and can be gotten with small set-top antennas in most situations.

Jonesie I was thinking the same thing...4 all the badmouthing of mediacom ...the people with cable who are ISU fans have got a real good shake from mediacom...

Except for the games you haven't been able to see at all on Mediacom but have on DirecTV...and the game is still available to DirecTV and Dish subscribers at any rate.

It has nothing to do with the resolution (720p vs 1080i vs 1080p), but with the bitrate. You could actually have a 720p signal with a higher bitrate than a 1080p signal. xxxxp/i is just the resolution.

The bitrate combined with the resolution and codec defines the quality of the picture. Kinda like how exposure in a camera is related to the aperture, ISO level and exposure time.

OTA Digital channels are limited to x amount of bandwidth - roughly 19.3 mbit/s. With the amount they have, they can deliver either a 720p or 1080i channel at a reasonable bitrate (they contain roughly the same amount of information), with a bit of room left over for a lower fidelity channel or two at a reasonable bitrate. You really couldn't cram two 720p or 1080i signals into 19.3 mbit/s and expect either one to look good.

SO, in short, 5.2 will be SD.

I think I understood most of that.... Thanks!
