That email didn't come from Jamie; it just didn't. It was written by a kid. The syntax, sentence structure, and errors give it away.
For example, just at the beginning:

1. "Several thoughts for your to ponder..."
2. "Interesting enough..."

This email is BS.

Just for the record - I'm a sports talk show host. Not a journalist for Iowa State. I do write stories on my website but I don't wear a "journalist" hat in Des Moines.

You might say I have responsibility but I didn't put this up...I simply put this up here. I trust Jon and Steve that they have reason to believe this email to be real and fact checked - they are not idiots. Jon even has explained what happened in this thread.
I am not a journalist either...let's see how this works:
My buddy(not a journalist either) said he got an email from a guy that says Matt stole money from him(nearly 197,000). I have asked Matt to verify these facts-he refuses to come to my house(because every time I talk to him, about him, or near him I am a ****)-so here it is: shocking news matt is a thief.

Snippy but to the point. That was a Tavern Clone.
I agree. I think the snippy was well deserved also. Evidently the Tavern Clone wasn't smart enough to know that ISU has to keep track of all donations and to issue receipts to donors for income tax purposes. It was an easy task for the athletic department to check on his contributions and purchases from ISU.

I wonder if the Mr. Matt Rainey knows that his buffoonery has been aired in public and that he is the laughing stock of a lot of real Cyclone fans!!:biglaugh::biglaugh:

Any lawyers in the crowd want to chime in on whether this email exchange, if it is NOT legit, could be grounds for a defamation of character, fraud, or some other kind of lawsuit? May be a stretch, but something like this, even if untrue, could hurt JP's reputation.

I am not a lawyer, but if one can take anything posted on a web site to be true, Matt P. appears to have experience in the are of defamation of character on the internet. (see link)
If you can believe what you read, it would appear that he has at least entertained legal action for falsified quotes being posted on an internet site.
I would think if this web site has any validity, Matt has most certainly considered potential legal implications.

I hope you are right. Also, there is the line about sending an email to the "Athletics Director". Jamie's official title is Director of Athletics......so doubt he would use that other term.......but if he did......the normal way to say it is Athletic Director, not Athletics.......may mean nothing, but seemed odd to me.

Pyrocyz- I don't expect JP to do anything but what he is now doing regarding the coaching situation since I'm sure there is no way we can afford a buyout now. But I also expect a good ad to not tie his own hands with this kind of contract so we get stuck in a situation like this.

That's fair. But if you were a coach negotiating a contract to come to ISU from a fairly solid position at a lower school, wouldn't you want some assurance that your chances at succeeding wouldn't be hampered because of the previous coach? I will give you the Jiri situation because that shouldn't have given Mcdermott an extra year, but the other two years, I have to problem with.

This is not always true. what if you can afford a $500 donation, and so can each of your 4 freinds. that equals $2500 bucks and you can buy 10 season tickets under the $2500 donation. on the other hand you can all donate $500 separately and still equal $2500. Does it really matter?? Not saying that this is the case but you are ASSumming that this is the case with no evidence.

You get better seats than you each would get at the $500 level, which some assert would be 'bad' because you might be taking from a single donor at that level. Well... the level gives you the right to a certain amount of seats as well. If its bad, then i suppose we should chastise every donor who takes their spouse and kids and buys under their one membership instead of having them all have individual, but lower level, NCC accounts. :jimlad:

Matt shouldn't check anything, that isn't his baby. He just threw it up here. That is Deaces' baby the way it sounds.
so if someone tells me that Matt is a rapist, because someone told me, don't i have a duty to check prior to posting it for the world to see?

Yep. I wonder how far back they have records on stuff like that.
At least as far back as the construction of Jack Trice which began in 1973. I know because I contributed to the construction and ISU had records of that.

Jamie may not be the best public speaker, but his written/electronic correspondence is not that primitive.
Again - he would never mistakenly write "interesting enough" instead of "interestingly" - even in a hurry.

Actually, the response he gave me three years ago when I told him I didn't think the music at football games was doing its job was extremely defensive like this one was. That's why I didn't say "I don't think this is real," because I have had personal experience with JP when he sends an unfavorable email back.
Could you post a copy of both your email and Jamie's email so that I could decide for myself if his response was defensive and immature? Thanks!

To the point of Matt bringing this issue forward –Understand that KXNO is built on creating/stoking controversy. They benefit from emotional response from fans. Probably even more so when the topic is one that gets you defensive about the program you love. My advice is to ignore KXNO and their “personalitiesâ€￾. What real value have you ever garnered by listening to them?
To the point of the email response – Donors/supporters own the ISU program. We are the ones that are here through the ages. Coaches and ADs come and go. The donors are the program. If you are really a fan, then you support the program through donations. It’s great to have casual fans that buy merchandise and single game tickets, but they are not the program. Jamie has every right to worry less about casual fans. I just wish he would try to recruit casual fans to become part of the program.

The Big 12 Tournament begins today...the hot topic on our site is some guy named Matt Rainey who may or may not be a Cyclone fan who reportedly lives in Urbandale.

Gotta love the Internet...

Great, great, great post Chris!

There's always the question of if the person is an actual fan, or instead some sort of troll.

Not that it makes JP's response any more warranted. But I can see reasons to validate who a person is in regards to the program.

I'd guess any school receives plenty of bogus "frustration" emails/letters. Checking who they are is probably warranted. How you respond.... another story.

This is hard-hitting Central Iowa journalism at its best. Spew filth, disseminated it, hope it starts controversy.

As soon as journalism becomes nothing more than the equivalent of 12 year old girls gossiping, I am out. Congrats sports talk radio folks, your profession is in many ways similar to the immature behavior or pre-adolescent girls...a fine career you have.

so you guys don't care that you have to be donor in order to be a die-hard fan in the eyes of your AD?

Just curious cause I was shocked at that reaction by your AD (no, not because of our history)
Look man, the supposed complainer said: "I see no improvement and until I do I will not be putting any of my money into your program." Now I think it's kind of smart, since the complainer clearly brought the subject up, to address that issue.

Hmmmm, let's just see how
much money that we are talking about.... How much support are we talking about.... Well now, upon looking at the records it appears that the complainer made an empty, bullsh*t threat. Hmmmm

I know that Jamie took it way too easy on the guy compared to what I would have told him! I don't care if the guy moves out of his mom's basement and grows up to be Donald Trump, I would still have let him have it.

And Jon said they gave him an everyday invitation to be on the show. That is not giving him an opportunity to verify authenticity or respond to the email.

If what you guys do is not journalism, how do you classify it? Sports talk show hosts should consider themselves a form of journalist. Perhaps thinking you are not is part of the problem. As someone who is regularly on the radio you certainly open yourselves up to slander (or in this case libel) charges. I would hope that you would fact check and give opportunity for responses when you "report news".

That is simply incorrect. They are entertainers who give their opinions.
Therefore they are not bound by the "rules" of hard-news journalism.
