Kudo's OP - I hadn't realized his % was that high. That's fantastic considering the teams we've played and also compared to last year. You just gave me a nice warm feeling...

While I think his performance yesterday highlighted a lot of need for improvement (e.g., hitting open recievers deep, zone read), I admit that I probably wouldn't be being so critical of his performance if he hadn't thrown that last pick. I hope you guys are right that we're seeing a new and improved Steele, but I'm worried that little has changed from last year. I just think that some major adjustments need to be worked on over the next two weeks, and hopefully that will do it. But JB should be showing up ready to play.

If you think a 15% increase is little than you are a tough sell

I'm not sure. I saw at least 3 deep passes overthrown that would have been huge gains or possible TD's against the hawks. Am I asking for too much?

It would have been nice for him to connect on at least 1 of those, but asking him to hit all of them is probably something that we shouldn't look for Steele to do. I wasn't at Kinnick but people are saying it was quite windy. Just like how wind affects a kickoff or FG attempt, it also affects some long balls. All of those deep balls were about a step or a step and a half in front of the WR. A couple of those were close enough that I thought the WR could have made a dive forward to try and make the catch.

And like others have said, Steele said he tried looking off the LB and thought he had done so successfully to create the window. Obviously he didn't. That is a teachable and correctable thing.

Jesus ******. Have you seen him interview at all or watched him play this year? He is much, much calmer and more comfortable in the pocket. When answering questions he is deliberate and articulate and seems to have an understanding of what he is supposed to do and what everyone else on offense is supposed to do. His completion percentage is up 15%. He is looking off defenders instead of staring down his first option. He isn't as quick to scramble. And this is against two pretty good teams for non conference. Tulsa and @Iowa were both tougher games than every single non con game last year.

outside of the redzone he wasn't bad. Once he got to the redone, he looked like a 5th grade flag football quarterback. Tons of improvement needed before saturday

You do realize it is harder to score in the redzone, right? And didn't he have one TD and one INT in the redzone? The two fumbles were on the RBs. (Although one was kind of an exchange issue wasn't it? Couldn't tell from the student section.) Not to mention on the FG drive Brun dropped a TD. Either way I would say he looked like "a 5th grade flag football quarterback".

It's a nice stat, but I'm not quite buying in yet. The red zone turnovers, the multiple missed deep balls, the decision making as Iowa tightened up and made adjustments...I think the high completion percentage masks a lot of those things.

Now, I'm not trying to take the opposite extreme and say he's been bad. He's been fine and I'm optimistic he'll continue to improve. But we saw this last year too and I don't think it's a given that it will get "fixed."

Those opportunities we ****** away yesterday will get corrected, we moved the ball folks. Steele is better than last season I think we will settle in.

If they don't get fixed...we will get destroyed in conference games! Steele definitely is our best hope but that doesn't mean my confidence factor is at an all-time high right now.

One fumble was on Steele! Indecisive at the point of the exchange. He needs to lead us into the endzone! QBs get too much blame when things go bad...but they also get a ton of praise when things go right. Part of the business. He is certainly not terrible but at this point I am not ready to get too excited about what is to come...at least not yet anyway.

He wasn't helped by the redzone play calling. We absolutely refused to throw on first or second down in there. The play calling needs to be mixed up. The beginning of the game was great. We were doing everything and moving right down the field. Then, in the last part of the 2nd quarter and the second half, we quit using the intermediate passing game which was really what opened everything up in the beginning.

I think Mess's inexperience showed Saturday and it put the offense in some bad spots. After a brilliant start we got really conservative and predictable for large parts of the game.

Tough freaking crowd on here today.

No one is giving him the Heisman, just commenting on how through 2 games he is completely 15% more passes. I bet those of you complaining would have **** your britches last year if he had completed 69% through 2 games.

He's actually exceeded my expectations in terms of productivity and efficiency. He still shows his inexperience with some of his decisions, and that's just something we're going to have to live with (which I think the staff has concluded). He looks far more relaxed this year and appears confident. I too wish he were more consistently accurate, but we know who he is at this point. Strong armed and good feet, but not a great decision maker. He's going to throw picks, probably one every 20-25 throws so we should just get used to this. I've seen both KU games as well and he's doing better than Crist is for KU, despite Crist's nearly flawless mechanics and SJ's horrid shotputting motion. We still don't have a receiver corps that can actually help him out by making athletic plays on the football, so we're still limited by this and being below average (Big12) at TE. We're a work in progress and I hope that he continues to improve.

We also failed to take advantage of some tremendous field position in the second half. We got very conventional pretty quickly and Iowa took great advantage. I think Mess and Jantz will learn from this.

We really needed to connect on a deep route when they began stacking the box on us just to keep them honest. They got increasingly aggressive in stacking the LOS on us and we really had no answer. It's something we're going to see conference opponents do to us, so we need to get a plan to attack this NOW.
