I think when it comes to rebates, only 10-20% of people actually fill them out, so that is 90-80% who don't.
I believe that. I wonder what percentage of those people would not have made the purchase without the "11% off" advertising? That is where Menard's wins big.

I don't know the answer to that. But I do know that when I worked for Menards (at a store) that I was told that the reason they offer rebates is that because most of the people don't spend the time to fill them out.

i don't let the 11% rebate affect purchases of things like nails or cleaning supplies. but we have a 5k+ project coming up and i have price-matched the 11% rebate with other sales prices and the rebate comes out ahead by about $300. you bet i'll wait for that rebate to come back. and so what if it's a gift card to the store - we buy stuff there every month so it will get used.

Don't get me wrong, I love the 11% rebates too. It's a good way to buy things you need that are never marked down and get credit to buy more stuff in the future. I'm just saying that Menards makes a killing off these sales because most people don't take the time to fill out the rebates as SCNCY said above. Also, you have a very quick window to use the rebate checks so it is easy to lose track and forget to use it. If you have a huge project, absolutely take advantage of it but if it is a $550 rebate check you are expecting for your $5000 purchase, I would make sure the clearinghouse doesn't "lose it". Pay a few bucks and get delivery confirmation through the post office. I have no idea if that will help your case if they lose it but it doesn't hurt.

BTW, does anyone shop at Kohls without a 30% off coupon? It's like the old Beth bath and beyond 20% off coupons. They were so plentiful that there's no reason to shop without one.

I believe Amazon does the same thing with most things they sell. Very rarely do you find something that doesn't have some sort of "discount" price.

i shopped at JCP way more when they had the "failed" pricing model. But I'm not an ideal customer so it didn't work. I'd rather get a fair deal than pretend I'm getting a fair deal.

and HH gave you the epiphany?

Menard's has to make a killing in these "sales". So many things have to happen in order for that 11% to take a hit on Menards. Consumer must fill out form, attach receipt, mail to clearinghouse within 2 weeks, redeem within 2 week window. If one of those don't happen, no rebate and menards pockets more cash. A sneaky thing menard's says is that your rebate becomes property of the clearinghouse. So if they lose it, Menards is not obligated in any way to reimburse you. I had a $15 rebate get "lost" so I never got a voucher for it. Besides that, every other rebate I have received.

A postal delivery man got busted a few years ago pocketing thousands of dollars of menards rebates... was working for a while until enough people complained on the same route...

That guy probably had some killer appliances and really nice flooring in his house.

For those with kids it's the same deal at Carters and Oshkosh. If you pay full price at either of those stores, ever, you're doing it wrong.

I know that the prices are inflated but isn't it the manufacturer that comes up with that bogus MSRP? Aren't all these stores at least offering a bogus discount from the SAME bogus pricing?

Sear got called on this practice years and years ago.
They would have a price on $350 on a product with a SALE $285 right below it. The trick was it was always priced that way. They never tried to sell the product for $350. It just gave the illusion of a savings.
After they got called on it they needed to actually try to sell it at the regular price at least some of the time. Then they could put it back on sale..

"Similarly, the lawsuits allege Kohl’s sold belted cargo shorts online for $35.99, advertised as down from the “original” price of $60"

Does someone actually think that $60 would have ever been a reasonable price for cargo shorts?

But you said BELTED cargo pants, right? I was told these were belted cargo pants?

just saw a car commercial yesterday that said "buy at dealer price! *dealer price not indicative of what dealer paid"

When I was doing car sales it always amazed me to see how uninformed people were about the prices during the bigger weekend tent sales with the multiple dealerships there. People would just assume they were getting a great deal because of all the stickers saying how much they were marking a vehicle down.

What most of them didn't know is most of the time the vehicle was marked lower than that every other day on the lot and when it was moved to the tent sale they actually increased the price by a few thousand and then marked down what they wanted. It would actually cost them more at the tent sale from what it was originally marked on the lot. Of course these were mostly used vehicles but it was crazy to see how many just assumed they were getting such a better deal than before.

I'm glad they are getting called out on this, I don't shop at Kohls for this reason, and I only go to JCP for the Sephora inside. I like a deal, but these stores aren't deals. They have deceptively high prices so that it looks like it is heavily discounted.

To be fair to everyone in the world car salesmen and dealers are almost universally awful and their whole job is to try to make sure the buyer doesn't get the best deal possible.

Agree that the 11% is huge racket. Like most rebates I am guessing the bulk go unclaimed and if claimed many remain unredeemed. I'll never buy just because of a rebate that small but will take advantage of purchases I am making anyway like this fall when I bought a bunch of trim boards, paint supplies, caulk etc for garage remodel and window trimming. Totalled enough to use a stamp and send it in for the $12 store check. The rebate "checks" do not expire so I'll end up using it since Menards is only a couple miles from my house. They kinda suck but are conveniently located for me as is Home Depot which sucks less.
