So I learned that The Crown Tournament starts today. Do any of these teams have close to their full roster with transfer season in full effect? 5 of the 16 teams are from the Big 12 which adds some intrigue.

Utah put a bunch of kids in the portal if I remember right. You ask a very good question. No idea would be my answer.

Seems like a pretty weak idea to begin with, but throw the portal on top of that and I'm not sure how it is going to draw enough interest.

For Utah, the top 8 guys in terms of minutes per game have all played today.

For Butler, it's 8 of the top 10.

Maybe the money is a good incentive? Maybe these teams are the exception?

Here is bracket, for anyone interested. (Tip times are Pacific).

Butler-UU nearing completion.

Does anyone know what payout is to participating schools? Maybe that's more motivation than anything.

$300,000 for the winner, $100k for 2nd, and $50k for the semi-finalists.

Surprisingly entertaining game here. Tied game with 13 seconds remaining.

Officials having a rough night in this Neb / ASU game. A lot of calls on shots with no contact while you could mug a guy on the perimeter and not get called. I would feel bad for ASU but then they pan the camera over to Hurley and I fell just fine with it.

I've really enjoyed this basketball season. Rooting for the Clones, rooting for the Big 12, rooting against the Big 10, accepting the talent in the SEC and top of the ACC, etc. Even catching games on off days without a dog in the fight, I'd pick the underdog and roll with it. When games got outta hand, switch channels and start anew. Good basketball is good basketball. Each year I realize it will come to an end and my addiction will have to adjust. I looked forward to the CROWN to extend/supplement my viewing until I determined it stands for:
Can
Really
Only
Win
Nothing
I feel it has diluted the game. It robbed from the NIT (yes, a bunch of "also rans") but still a reward with a nice format for those teams. It's timing with the portal implications have some players playing who know they will be playing elsewhere next year or hope to be. It's basically a preview of what the Dance will look like if expanded. Not sure we need another "participation trophy" tournament.

The Crown is like bowl games. Lots of guys not playing because of the transfer portal. But it gives a nice preview of the younger players that will be on the roster next year. Treat it going in like an exhibition and not a real end of season competition and it’s a nice distraction during the long week leading up to the final four. Had it been the first week of the NCAA it probably wouldn’t have been watchable.

Brutal end to the NIT championship game. Dude for UC Irvine missed a bunny in overtime that would have won it. Chattanooga wins their first NIT championship.

UC Irvine missed a bunch of free throws down the stretch as well. Has to be gut-wrenching.
