Looking for recommendations on general physician in Des Moines area. Getting close to 40 and haven’t been to a doctor in 15 years or more. What steps should I be taking for my health?

I am fine with either a man or a woman doctor.

Do you guys do physicals every year?

I am 37 and see a Dr. 3 to 4 times a year(asthma and blood pressure) mostly. But I do get a physical once a year, painless so whatever. I am in Ames so probably not much help though.

Yes, I get a physical every year, and at your age, you should be too.

My aunt is a nurse and she harps on our entire family to do so. She said so many things could be avoided or lessened by simply getting a physical each year.

Get in there!

No matter what kind of insurance you have, physicals and preventative treatments are almost always 100% covered. No excuse for not getting checkups.

I’ve gone with internal medicine doctors as well, but I have a complicated history. Benefit is they’re adult only.

Annual visits have become standard of care for adults. Healthy males not going to the doctor for a decade-plus is also pretty standard.

Find a PCP (primary care) that you like, find out what insurance covers (most likely just a small co-pay for you, if that), and get an appointment set up. At 40, you almost certainly won’t be doing annual “physicals” unless there is an underlying issue.

I'm 61 and haven't had a checkup in close to 10 years. The only time I have gone was when I had the damn shingles.
Should probably go back.

Ballsy at your age friend. Have you been checked for prostate cancer yet?

More important: colonoscopy every 10 years (at least). Mortality rate from colorectal cancer is down, but that’s primarily because of early detection. Get it done ASAP.

I’m very blessed to be overall healthy but I continue to get one every year. Do I need to? Probably not. I just figure if/when something does go wrong I’ll find out sooner than later.
