Speeding Ticket Questions

Anyone with any experience on how the Iowa DOT points system works? I have had the following moving violations in the last 12 months:

Running a Stop Sign (September 13)
12 over in 70 mph zone (March 14)
10 over in 45 mph zone (July 14)

Am I going to lose my license here? Obviously I really need to get my driving under control but will I be suspended or forced to take driving class??

I believe u can take a class to keep your license, unless things have changed.

I think it is 3 moving violations. I could be wrong though.

In looking on Iowa.gov I believe the first two speed violations in a 35-55 zone at 10 mph over or less are not countable moving violations. Suspension starts at 3 countable moving violations. Am I reading this right??

One was 12 over. He has two offenses. He shouild see if he can take a class at this point. He has a few months to go.

Not the same state, but in Indiana I had three moving violations in one year and had to take a defensive driving class to not lose my license. I'd assume Iowa law is somewhat similar.

Not sure about the stop sign but I got three speeding tickets in a 12 month period in 02-03 when I lived in Ames and I had to go to DMACC in Ankeny and take a traffic course and then was on probation for 12 months where I couldn't get a ticket. It was a pain in the butt and the course was a couple hundred bucks but I kept my license.

Just a question... Did you contest the tickets? Take the court date. In my experience, the cops appears about half the time. When they don't, the charges are dismissed. I have contested 5 tickets (not really contested 5, just took my court appearance), the officer only showed up twice.

Just something to think about in the future.

I'm hoping the latest ticket will not send me to driving school and probation. But if it does it's better than losing my DL all together.

If I take my court appearance and the officer shows up, what do I do then? Plead guilty and pay the fine?

When was the last time you tried this? I'm just curious because I know somebody who tried it recently, and now they have a "preliminary hearing" which is where you plead not guilty and the officer didn't have to be there. Then they set a real court date so the officer knew he had to come.

It has been a few years but there was a preliminary date, followed by the actual court date. The cops know the date but that doesn't mean they will appear. In fact, a friend of mine is a cop in a small town and he never appears. The town doesn't want to pay for either him or the town's attorney to appear. They just figured they would get what they could, knowing most will not fight it.

Him telling me that is what prompted me to start fighting them.

It's been 11 years since I last lost my license, but twice it happened due to being a habitual violator. Three moving violations in a 12 month time span= suspension. I never took the classes. I just waited out the 60-90 days or however long it was. First speeding ticket was on my bicycle. Yep, that counts as a moving violation. After you get your license back, welcome to SR-22.

Not to derail but do those radar detectors work? I am thinking about getting one with my 24 hour drive coming up next month.

It really depends. I have a good friend who has one and it works well with a few exceptions.

At least his also detects the same range as automatic doors so it is not the best in the city but has a lower sensitivity setting for when you are and higher for when you are not.

Also the same guy has done numerous ride alongs and according to him not all cops leave their radars on all the time. When they are driving around. If they see uouw going faster than others they may flip it on to see what you are doing.This is obviously to try counteract the detectors.

From my experience riding with him he has been able to avoid a few speed traps since they pretty much always have their radar on but other than that it has mixed results.

His dad also has one that doesn't work at all so make sure to get a good one.

I have a valentine one hardwired into my mirror. Around town in does a lot if false positives but once you get use to the different sounds it makes, you figure out witch one is for real. Works great on the interstate and I feel naked driving without one.

if you get one, get a good one. Either a v1 or Escort 9500.

(2) were 6-10 mph over in a 65 and the third was a 5mph over in a 25. thank you university heights police, the kinnick stadium area is much safer because of your efforts to slow wreckless individuals like myself... for the record I was legitimately at 5 over, that wasn't a reduction.

I will contest the last one in hopes the cop no shows. if they do, I will request to pay the fine but have the ticket waived. last resort is take the class to avoid losing license. Will be purchasing a radar detector and just using cruise control at all times. my problem isnt even that I intend to speed, I just dont pay attention and am suddenly going 10 over without knowing. I also drive 50k+ miles a year, so my odds of getting ticketed are increased simply due to time spent on the road.

Wouldn't the paying attention part be the reason they're giving those tickets?
