schwans still in michigan here... they left me a promo flyer. expensive $$$
I guess I don't agree that it's THAT expensive. It's not cheap. But if you break down their servings and cost...it's very reasonable.

For instance if you wanted a chicken patty and fries. Chicken patties are $16 for 12 and fries are $9.50 for 13 servings. So you can have a chicken patty and fries for $2.10. Tough to beat that. Even if you doubled that is under $4.50.

That was the thing with Schwans. It was expensive, it was also really, really good, especially for frozen food. The ice cream, cheese balls, chicken strips, fan tail shrimp, pizza....all of it was great. The gold rush ice creams bars are still the best ice cream bar I've ever had. I grew up in the middle of nowhere and to have this stuff dropped off at our door was awesome.
I was going to say the same thing. My mom bought a to. From Schwab’s because they delivered and we couldn’t always get to town.

Agree. The other home delivery outfits that have become popular recently certainly aren’t cheap either.

I can remember my mom getting those big tins of fruit and dividing them up into quart-sized freezer boxes. Sunday night suppers were always ice cream with sliced peaches, or strawberries, or raspberries and a bowl of popcorn. She’d save the tins and store Christmas decorations in them.

Used to get food from them all the time. Then the quality went down and I could find better alternatives at the store. Then they started a “fuel charge” on top of already high prices. Haven’t bought a thing from them in over 15 years and don’t miss it.

Sad. We were a Schwans family growing up and had an uncle that drove for them. They seemed to have kept the same quality but got priced out.

This is sad, We bought those 2.5 gallons of the chocolate marshmallow tins when all of us kids were home. Every once in a while our Schwans driver would give us kids the orange pushups as a treat.

I have to think there is a market for this. Specialized food products that are delivered to your home seems like something that would work. I guess places like Costco/Sam's offer similar products for a lot lower price.

The rebranding seemed like a desperate attempt to change something without changing anything. So this isn't very surprising.

Grocery stores offering home delivery, along with other services that do this, was probably the final nail in the coffin.

The COVID boom gave the business a little bit of false hope, when the reality was that the business had a dying and aging customer base.

I have a lot of respect for the Schwan's family. Sad to see, but businesses need to evolve or die especially in "retail".

More variety at a lower cost, sounds about right! Schwan's couldn't compete on distribution and really needed to drastically change their business model. But ran out of money and time.

Yes, but hy-vee doesn't carry the same kind of stuff we got from Schwan's. Things like gallons of amazing ice cream, a box of Jalapeno poppers/Mozzarella Sticks that could feed a family for a week, etc.
