Early 90's, I think. They advertised on radio and newspapers to throw out their ice cream products. People got really sick.
Those tins were long gone, wasn’t E. coli, and the recall didn’t come close to causing bankruptcy. The suppliers responsible for the problem shelled out about $275 million in insurance money.

I can't believe Schwan's managed to go through the Rona and not explode. They had food delivery before pretty much anyone had food delivery. While everyone else was converting to a delivery or pickup model, Schwans was....well, I'm not sure what they were doing. All they had to do was say "hey, you want food delivered? Cuz we already do that"

Now everyone has food delivery. They blew it.
Agree. Instead they are claiming the pandemic was a major reason for their demise. Really managed the opportunity poorly.
Hard to believe they’re closing shop after having over 7000 of the Inca Gold trucks on the road back in the ‘90s.

COVID boom was great, but screwed up their supply chain. Wrong products in wrong places, wrong products in right places, right products in wrong places....ect.

Just their ice cream sandwiches were worth chasing that truck down. Never had a soggy ice cream sandwich from the Schwans truck.
Most were less than a week old by the time the customer enjoyed them. Grocery store ic sandwiches couldn’t come close.

The COVID boom gave the business a little bit of false hope, when the reality was that the business had a dying and aging customer base.

I have a lot of respect for the Schwan's family. Sad to see, but businesses need to evolve or die especially in "retail".

Doesn’t help when a gallon of ice cream is almost $20 after taxes and fees.

With grocery delivery, Uber Eats, and DoorDash that will delivery you about anything, this is unfortunate to lose an iconic brand but not super surprising.
