Kansas State fans are madder than I have ever seen

I believe I have shared this story before on this board, but in the late-80's there was a year the student tickets were a rotation between 4 seats that ranged from really good to nose bleed. Our really good tickets were 4 rows behind the opposing coach. We had those seats one game against Missouri when Norm was still coaching. That dude was BIG and had a menacing brow when trying to intimidate officials. At one point he was yelling at a ref of Latino decent, and when the guy turned away, Norm yelled, "Hey, Taco Bell, I'm not done with you yet!" We yelled, "Hey Norm, nor racial statements! This is Iowa, the education state!) FYI - Some of Anthony Peeler's family were a couple of rows in front of us. Norm, stopped, turned and looked right at us...and winked!...then turned right around and yelled again at the ref. He always LOOKED out of control, but that night we learned he was very much in control!

I loved that arrangement and that's when Hilton was really amazing. I always felt the students being intermingled with the general public helped get the whole place up and loud.

I don't remember sitting behind the bench but I do recall the good seats being behind the basket. I distinctly remember that Kansas game in '89. We were front row behind the basket and the student section was yelling at Kevin Pritchard to shave his eyebrows. In our defense, he deserved it and the proof is below.

It looks like he still could use a bit of a trim.

Wow, that is impressive that you still have that! That was a fun team to watch. I didn't, however, enjoy our nosebleed seats, but there really isn't a terrible seat in Hilton...it was ALWAYS loud and fun.
It was in my display case of ISU stuff. I was trying to remember why I didn't go to the Drake game that year. Shame on me.

I think it was $2/game for student tickets when you got the season package when I was there . 1977-78 and 78-79 I had those. Might have a pic somewhere on a flash drive but too lazy to dig for it.
That's for the folks that have never seen State Gym before it was remodeled, or worse, never had to wait through three games of pick-up ball to get a game in Beyer before the Lied Center was built.

Of course we're not all farmers.

The vast majority of people at Iowa State games grew up and live in Iowa. They probably have a close connection to some small town even if they didn't grow up in one. The same thing applies at K State but just exchange "Iowa" for "Kansas". There is absolutely a high level of shared culture between Midwestern ag schools.

If you can't see how there are major cultural overlaps between the two, you're just being obtuse. Our fanbases might be more like each other than we are like our in-state brethren.
I feel a whole lot more "country" with the masses at Manhattan, especially the college bar scene, than Ames. The student population feels a lot more country. We have approximately 35% of our students from Chicago and Minneapolis areas?? Someone could correct me on that, but that is unlikely ksu has those numbers. What major area do they draw from besides KC?

K-State is a glorified JUCO.

I remember those days.
I remember one of my first pick-up games in Beyer, a guy on the other team got the ball and came flying down the court. I was back on D, and set up for a charge. He planted his knee in my chest, dunked on me, and landed straddling me writhing on the floor with wind knocked out of me. He looked down, smiled and said, "Ain't no charges in pick-up, white boy!"...It was Ronnie Harris, Harrison Barnes biological father.

That is a great story! I don't have anything near that good.

That seems really high. My guess would have 10% max at ISU from those two metros.
6,600 kids from Illinois and Minnesota....roughly 22% from these states. I couldn't identify specific metro areas.

46% of students are out of state.

See office of registrar for Iowa State.

I doubt ksu has similar demographics, but prove me wrong if u want to.

My previous numbers were based on total students. Undergrads from these 2 states are approximately 25% of total undergrads.

I had seats during this time in row one or two right behind our bench. I still remember Johnny Orr's vein popping out of his head. It was pretty cool close up!
