Yep I dont get the U2 love, 1 good album with joshua tree but thats it end of story

Shouldn't forget AC/DC, they were dominant in high school. For me today in my older age it is the Dan, more sophisticated jazzy music style, the 70s rocked.

Per U2, I am the opposite on Joshua Tree, hate that damn album. Per the group, they are okay, there were much better bands in the past-Zeppelin, the Who, Stones, old VH, etc. I saw U2 in 92' at ISU until friend started barfing up do due drinking too much had to take him out of the stadium. With Joshua Tree I give them a C+/B- ; without, a B to B+,; and without Bono's antics/smugness/sunglasses they get an A-, liked Rattle and Hum much much more, was kind of fun. I think the U2 love is pushed onto you by the media and the fact they don't have competion, they had good timing as all of the huge groups of the 70s and 80s started to age and fade away.

Styx. The greatest American rock band of their time. The only reason they got a bad rap is becasue all the critics are cynical ***-holes

Cream

The Who

in no order

Add the Yardbirds (especially the Jeff Beck version) to this list and you have an impressive elite eight - both in terms of talent and progressive style.

+1 for you. One of my favorite "it's so horribly bad it's good" movies.

Too subjective, but all the bands listed so far are good. I don't believe anybody's mentioned Aerosmith so far. Ozzy's solo stuff is awesome as well.

I really dig 80's music (I grew up on hair-metal and I'm not ashamed to admit that I still listen to most of it), and the 90s had some good stuff come out (granted, there was a lot of soul-less crap as well). I'm enjoying the re-emergence of the harder end of the spectrum over the past few years. Some really good young bands out there right now.

I need a definition of "Greatest rock band" before I can make a list. Are we talking my favorites or the best selling or the best live or ...?

It's a subjective list, not a quiz. Just list your own favorites. No wrong answers, unless your list includes Poison.

Tonight, mine would be:
Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin
TOOL
Pearl Jam
Doors
Alice In Chains
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Nirvana
Soundgarden
Nine Inch Nails

but it could change by tomorrow...

All other bands might as well not exist when compared to Nirvana.

That being said Red Hot Chili Peppers would come damn close.

Don't forget Slade. The greatest band nobody never knew. Ten Years After, Blind Faith, lots of good ones.

This might just be me, but I never "got" Nirvana. To me, Nirvana is just Kurt Colbain mumbling into a microphone. I know...people have told me to listen to "Unplugged", but it didn't help.

AC/DC needs to be on the list. Still rockin' today. I thought I'd be able to get some tickets to the Black Ice tour down here. Turns out it (and 17 other AC/DC shows around the country) sold out within minutes.

I know there's been a lot of flack with the "sold out", Napster and RIAA issues, but Metallica deserves to at least be mentioned.

AC/DC!!!!! What other band can lose their lead singer, RIP Bon, and bring in someone else and have one of the biggest selling albums of all time in "Back in Back"? Even though they are getting older, Angus and the boys can still put on one helluva show!!
