Any therapists out there? Patella tendon now

So I have a bad shoulder that I separate frequently while playing basketball or volleyball. I realize I need either rehab or maybe surgery.
But I was wondering if there was some sort of bracing or tape job that helps prevent separation while playing. I remember seeing Candace Parker playing with a brace, and I think I remember Kerri Walsh or Misty May having some sort of brace, but I wasn't concentrating on their shoulders...:mask:

My son separated his shoulder in football this fall. He fell on a fumble and a big DT fell on his shoulder as he extended his arm. We took him to the doctor and they found that he had no serious damage so he's doing physical therapy 4x per week starting with light weights and motion exercises. He'll move to heavier weights depending on pain. He's on a 3 month program before they re-evaluate him.

See a doctor and make sure that you don't have serious damage that will require surgery. If not, you may be able to firm up the muscles with exercises.

IMO, get an evaluation - top priority.

Then, based on that - start doing some strength work on that shoulder. I dislocated mine back in HS a few times - both of 'em. While it was part a joint issue - part of it was strength. The muscles hold many of these joints together - so if the muscle there is very strong, it will help.

Start slow (resistance bands, low weight) and go from there. But as noted, you need to make sure there is not any structural damage before you go putting more stress on it.

I'm in the process of recovering from a broken collarbone from a ski accident.

When I went to the emergency room they diagnosed me with a broken collarbone that will heal with the passage of time and recommended that I schedule a followup visit in two to three weeks.

Last week's Wednesday I had my follow-up visit.

The orthopedic surgeon said the corner of my collarbone was shattered and that there was no chance due to the location and severity of the breakage that the bone would heal without surgery.

I was immediately scheduled for surgery.

Now I've got screws and wire in my left shoulder.

This past Wednesday I had the bandages and stitches removed so I can once again shower.

And I've been told that a full recovery is likely in five more weeks.

Which means that I will be skiing again this season.

It really depends on how severe the separation is. If its not a bad separation, then it will heal on its own. Maybe some light resistance exercises will help with recovery etc. But if its more severe, surgery will be your best bet. However, a doctors evaluation is your best bet, like 22 said.

Thanks for all the help...
but in the meantime, is there such a thing as a brace I can wear while I am playing sports, to help prevent another separation. Anybody know of such an aparatus?

Not that big of deal, when it separates, I just shove it back in. It is to the point where it doesn't really hurt too bad anymore. Is that good? :biglaugh:

My son had the heavy-duty strips on his back for muscle spasms and they worked great. I doubt that they have anything like that for shoulder separation. They may have braces that limit the shoulder motion to prevent injury but you should talk to a doctor before you try that.

Clavicle straps can be purchased either on line or at a medical supply store.

Thanks for all your suggestions. My, shoulder, now, is the least of my worries. On Friday, I suffered a rupture of my left Patella tendon. Which, for those of you who are in the know, really sucks. It will be a long recovery...

I am a PT.

I work at Mary Greeley and we offer sports injury screening for free anytime during the week.

Sounds like you are talking about a subluxation in your shoulder. PM me with any specific questions.

I love how you use the word subluxation........Good to know that it has expanded itself from the Chiropractic field. ajk4st8 is probably right about the diagnosis.

It gets used...another example: subluxation of the radial head

aka...nursemaid's elbow
