I'm no IT person they will find this thread eventually but your first mistake was using Norton.

Thats a good start, now run a full system scan. Should clean most of it up.

Might I recommend also running a free program called Malwarebytes. I seems to do a very good job cleaning alot of this stuff up.

One of the reason it couldn't remove the virus is because it may be running, usually you can go to task manger and locate the .exe file and end it, and then try to delete the file; however some virus are sneaky and as soon as you end the process it starts right back up again...

What anti-virus do you suggest? I've had the same norton system for 4 or 5 years and this is the first virus I've ever had.

Thanks for the input

I will disagree with this and I am an IT person. I use AVG on my laptop which I hardly ever use but the main PC in my house is running Norton 2009 and over the years has saved my butt from having to reinstall my OS probably. You just have to set it up right so it's not a hog and completely anal with everything you do but once you have it setup just right at least me personally I think it's fine and probably more up to date and effective with virus detection and removal than some of the free ones out there.

Booting into safe mode and running the scans and deleting the files can usually get around that behaviour.

Run spybot and adaware to see what they will find. Norton isnt perfect but its not horrible either. Usually Norton will grab a certain file that it deems to be a problem but not clear out other roots of the file so it will keep reappearing. Try those spyware removal products I mentioned and see what happens.

Downloading more antivirus apps wont help. This is a peice of spyware that has already spread. There are probably registry entries now that antivirus wont pick up. 4429, when you have run the antispyware apps and removed what they find, PM me. Ill walk you through some registry removal steps.

Malwarebytes Anti Malware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Combofix and SDFix, as well as an AVG scan should clean most anything you've got up.

I usually start with a hijackthis log, and work from there. If there appears to be something particularly nasty, extract SDFix to the systemroot drive (usually C:), reboot into safe mode, run SDFix, reboot, run combofix, reboot, run a full MBAM scan, reboot and run it again and see if anything re-appears, reboot and run spybot S&D, reboot and run AVG full scan.

That generally gets rid of everything "naughty".

I run no antivirus on any of my machines, though, and the last time I bothered to run a scan with MBAM and Spybot, it found nothing.

Enable automatic updates through MS, don't use IE, and don't download/install suspect applications, and you've got nothing to worry about, for the most part. At least nothing that will be fixed by using Norton.

IMO, almost all of the "for pay" antiviruses are pretty much a waste of money. The only one I'd probably really pay for is F-Secure.

In my experience, it is much faster than IE, and you can almost infinitely extend it's functionality with add-ons.

Firefox wont protect a user from clicking yes when a "free" app installs bogus crap. Starts with the user. Firefox is a preference and not an end all solution, just remember that. I use both IE and firefox and love things about both.
