It's now illegal to sell tobacco products to people under 21

Wanna say from a high school perspective, this is a great move. The vaping habit is being picked up like crazy by young students who have easy access from senior friends. This should slow that problem (though I’m sure there are 21+ losers more than willing to supply a 14 year old)

That’s what I was thinking, if they want them, they will find a way to get them. Ban the smokes if they are that bad.

That's the thing. Kids are going to get it. Marijuana is illegal. You think high school kids are not smoking it because of that?

Way up there
Indian casinos in WA and ID is "yes".

I'm pretty sure you're required to smoke on reservation land. I went to a funeral a few months back on a reservation in Nebraska and people were allowed to smoke in the church, during the funeral and during the burial. I don't think the non smoking laws are a thing in their communities yet, sadly, they have bigger fish to fry when it comes to substance abuse.

I think the rate of high school kids smoking marijuana would be a lot higher if it was 21+, and of course, even higher if it was 18+.

As I said, high school kids are going to get to it, but this will lower the numbers.

So dumb. I mean I don't smoke or use the products. However, if they are going to move everything to 21 they need to move the right to join our military to 21. Basically by saying you can join our military and fight but you are not old enough to smoke, drink, or chew.

18 is the age for many career decisions since that age usually coincides with high school graduation age. Military would be an appropriate option at that age.. Smoking and drinking age is certainly debatable. I think 19 is good.

But what I do say is we need to decide what is an adult and what isnt. Either you are an adult at 18 or you are an adult at 21 or some other age.

Agreed. And this should settle whether a college student is a "kid" or not (or at which age a college student is no longer a "kid").

I don't get why people think it needs to be a one size fits all in regard to "being an adult".

So if they raise this and military service to 21, I guess you shouldn't be able to vote until 21 either.

I guess you should be able to rent a car and get kicked off your parents insurance at 21 as well.

Makes complete sense to phase it. Vote at 18 - or even 16? - go ahead, there's an argument that it's a low directly impactful decision. Smoking and drinking? Let's give the brain a bit more time to make better decisions and deter a few. Military? That one I struggle with. I want to knee jerk with "make it 21" but realize it's the better or preferred life choice for many at 18 (especially those in less than ideal circumstances) and taking that away if you aren't going to force guardians OR the state to provide for them in the interim makes it that much harder on them.

Freedom is tough for lots of people. To live in a free society you must also recognize and respect other people’s freedom regardless of whether you think their choices are right. Of course there are black and white items like murder and stealing, others that are grey which smoking around others might fall into, but I think to maintain a free society we must try not to impose laws and restrictions on others. For anyone advocating restrictive type laws, eventually you will also be restricted as well. While I understand “the right reasons” I don’t support making decisions for other “free” people.

The drinking limit was raised from 18 to 19, and then 19 to 21. If you were born 1959 or before, you were allowed to drink when you hit 18. If you were born Jan. 1960, or later, the age was 19. My brother was born in Oct. of 59, so he could legally drink in high school after hitting 18, some of his classmates born in 60, had to wait a whole another year, till they could legally purchase alcohol.

I had to wait until I was 19 to drink, not sure when the law was passed to move it up to 21.
It changed the year of the first VEISHA riots...coincidence?

I felt the same way as this up til about 5 years ago. Went with my son on an 8th grad DC trip and I was amazed how many of the parents could not go without drinking during the trip. It was a 24 hr bus ride and first thing that over 1/2 the parents did after getting off the bus was find a grocery or liquor store. These moms/dads were drinking hard also. Every night even when they were told to stop so the kids wouldn’t see it so much.

I started noticing these people when I was in convenience stores or the grocery store at the same time. Always had a case or handle in their cart at checkout.

A 24 hour bus ride with a bunch of 8th graders? Who WOULDN'T drink after that.

They need a wonder bread ban...
