Had to drive down and back later yesterday for a family event. Spent more time driving than there but oh well. While there, DH sent a pic of shelf cloud rolling in at our place. Shortly after, the sirens start going off in the town I was in. Cool, cool. Could only see a bit to the south so there was a bit of anxiety before we all figured it out it was an extension of a watch and not a tornado. But it did get me looking at radar and seeing the nasty stuff coming at us. Event kept going but I'm like when can I leave because I wanted to get north ASAP. The nasty stuff was to the northwest coming across so I knew the faster I got north, the more I'd miss. By the time I left, I only made it just past state line (and past one of two firetrucks I saw out storm spotting, always a comforting feeling lol) and ran right into it. Couldn't see the road 2 feet in front of me so I went about 5mph for a few minutes just trying to get to the east/west road and then not be driving into it. As Boxster would say, made it and DND. Did get ahead of the worst of it though - 80mph further to the west.
If I'm on the motorcycle in stuff like this I look for a self service car wash to pull into.

I was in a fairly rural area so my plan if it did get nasty was probably actually to stay in the open away from trees, maybe try to get down a hill a bit. Or otherwise see if I could get to a town but that wasn't going to happen with where I hit it.

My grandmother died of metastasized colon cancer. It infiltrated the rest of her body before she even knew she had it. My father, my sisters & I are rigorous about getting scoped. Screening is vital to early detection and successfully beating colon cancer.
I have asked for only one thing for my birthday. Mrs. Velo hasn't had a mammogram in several years and I told her that her getting a mammogram was all I wanted for my birthday.

I'm afraid I'm not going to get it. :(

That makes me sad. So many types of cancers can be stopped in their tracks by early detection. Mammos scare the hell out of me, and I'm on edge until the report comes out, every single time, despite the fact that there are no indications I should be scared. But the three days of sweating it out are well worth the peace of mind. I hope Mrs. Velo changes her mind. Age 45 to 54 should be an annual event. 55+ you can continue the annual, or extend it to every other year. Hopefully she at least does a monthly self exam.

Story time!

On Saturday morning we decided to go down to the Freedom Fest parade before going out to MrsWxs Aunt's house in Newhall to swim (don't ask me why her grandparents pool 10 minutes from our house is not acceptable). We get down there and are unloading the kids and stuff to go to the parade when LittleWx goes "A bird a bird!" Yes dude there are birds everywhere "No a bird in the van!" Whaaaa turn around and sure enough a little sparrow flew into the van and was sitting on the floor of the front passenger seat. I try to shoo it out which caused it to fly into a little crevice under the dash. Well crap

MrsWx says go on with the kids and I will try to get it out. She doesn't but leaves the windows open hopefully far enough for it to fly out. We don't hear it on our way to/from Newhall so we figured it got out.

Sunday morning while driving we start hearing "tweet tweet tweet". Aww hell naw. Next thing I know a bird is flapping around my feet while I am driving. So I pull over pretty quickly hoping we can get it out. Nope. Stop one more time before getting on the interstate with no luck. On the way to the airshow we hear it tweeting and flapping around in the console every once in a while. Nothing on the way home so we left the windows open hoping it would fly out overnight.

I was in my zone and just opened the garage door and left this morning without thinking to see if a bird flew out so Lord knows where this story will end. Hopefully not with a dead bird in our van console.

I try to help her with the self exams but I usually get distracted. ;)

Seriously though, someone was trying to get a spouse to do a colonoscopy. It isn't exactly the same, but if they refuse they can get the kit where you send in a stool sample and they analyze that. It isn't as good as the poke and probe, but better than nothing because:

I wish I could give 2 ratings for one post, not sure if the funny or friendly one is more appropriate

The kit isn't recommended for someone with a family history...but for the average Joe or Jill, oh hell yeah.

Was a good weekend for a trip to Duluth and the North Shore. Was pretty crazy how it was 78 degrees at Gooseberry Falls and 6.5 miles farther up the road at Split Rock it was 55. Both felt pretty good, by the way. When we turned around and drove back down the road it was back up in the mid 70s by GF. Crazy stuff.

It's funny - the vixen refuses to have a colonoscopy :)mad:) but has her annual mammogram like clockwork.

One of my sisters had DCIS, so I'm on the annual plan. The first mammogram I had after McFarland started using their 3D, super duper, sees all, form of screening wasn't any different at the time, but a few hours later I got called to schedule an ultrasound on one side because there was "something there." At first I'm like "cut 'em both off if need be, I don't need 'em." Then, as KC says, the nerves started especially as the day got closer. I'd never had an ultrasound either, but I wanted that to be the final "new" thing to me. Final result: a radiologist himself did part of the ultrasound and finally he said, "I think this is just a duct that's kind of folded over on itself. Let's set a followup mammogram on this side in six months just to be sure." I did, and all was well.

I understand that no one wants the cancer answer, but if you have it and don't know it, how does one justify that? Of course, I don't mind going to the dentist, and remember fondly the two times I had an ER trip because I sliced a tiny bit off a finger as I was trying to julienne vegetables for supper ....

I got sent to an ultrasound early on (in my fifties) and I was in a state of panic. Turned out to be scar tissue and not an issue, but waiting for the results was torture. The relief afterward, however, was exquisite.

In the rural areas you hope for a bridge you can park underneath. Other times you just get wet.

I went to the Porkies last summer...was in the 80s down along Highway 2 and by the time I got within 10 miles of the park, it was in the 50s.

I'll take cooler summer temps any day over feeling like I'm standing in an oven outside.

Sorry. When I first read this in passing I thought it said "my plan to get nasty".
