I wondered if it was also because we have never played this late in the year. Is there grass that will hold up in December in Iowa?

It’s only one week later than we probably play every 2-3 years.

But we played far more home games late in the season with than normal with the Big 12 finale at home and the additional game. It also was a cold late fall. A combination of events that will probably never happen again. The short term and long term safety concerns of field turf should make it a definite no. I've been on Nebraska's field and thought it was dusty with just a bunch of kids running around. That black rubber is nasty.

one week....try a couple days. We've had a game the last few days of Nov. every year for the last 10+ years.

I talked to a good source this weekend and he said there are no plans to redo (re-sod) the surface of the field for next year. Just really do not understand this decision, the field did not hold up well last year.

It was an early hard frost plus not just one but several home games After that frost. I'm sure the grass will be in good condition again but next August. As long as we don't go back to the concrete of the 90's we will be ok.

Been said we re-hired the original grass guru who's been gone for a year or 2? Probably reported in this thread somewhere?

I don't care what gets done so long as it is exactly what CMC wants. If tuning up the grounds crew works great. If replacing the sod with turf or a hybrid great. Just make sure we can offer best-in-class facilities to our athletics programs...

Dont make long term decisions based off one data point. It was a crazy wet summer/fall with an early frost. The field has help up well just about every other year.

Has a good source of info and asks CF why they aren't changing to artificial after one tough season? Makes sense. Personally I hope we never go back to fake.

I assume we haven't scheduled any games for December this year?
Since when does the weather in Ames different from November 23 to December 1, those of you that think having a game on December 1st or the last week of November is any different really don't have much to go on.
It was a rough fall, but thinking that wont happen again is very short sighted. Whatever the case we can not let the condition of the field get as bad as it was last year the last few games, and if they think they can fix the condition without doing a complete rehab then so be it, but I hope if it is needed they do what it takes to rehab it.

Who do you know who has the pull to make sure the weather this year be exactly the way that CMC wants it, so that the turf is fully healthy?

I mean, our current field has gone pretty long since its last full strip and redo from the botttom up. I want to say we did it about 10-12 years ago, and about 10 years before that. It is probably about time to do that, and to beef up the drainage system (and maybe look at heating solutions) while we're doing it.

Assuming its a one year problem because we got a lot of rain this year may be a bad assumption. The midwest is getting more and more of these kinds of rain deluges that cause drainage issues as a result of climate change.

Will be 11 years this spring/summer and was 12 years before that:

Quote from 2008:
“We played on (the field) for 12 years, which is phenomenal,” Andresen said. “Over a period of a dozen years you build up a thatch layer. Our thatch layer got to be four to five inches thick. We have a sand-based field and the sand will drain water as fast as you can put it in. However, the five-inch layer of thatch holds up water, so we were due for a rain, mud disaster game.

If Campbell wants a pink astroturf field then he should get one. That being said I hope he likes the grass.
