Because it is Criner's logo. See below

"Criner hired equipment manager Roger Gade and the two of them gave ISU fans a thrill by introducing new helmets..."

Johnny"s teams always used the Cy dribbling a basketball logo- never used the CrinerClone on any uniforms. (which I like compared to the emoji) . View attachment 50443

I hated this thing but taking the lettering off of the top makes it look fantastic. I have changed my mind- we should go this route.

Correct. The Cyclone was the school logo in use for over a decade, also used with the cursive Cyclones script, depending on application. Yes, it started with Criner, but the I-State logo similarly rolled out with Chizik. Both coaches with a fondness for probation and putrid football.

When Hoiberg was playing for Orr, I could go in a store and buy a Cyclone logo shirt as part of the current branding in use. It's that association that I speak of.

The 1970-80s period saw many, many variations of Cy logos and pretty much all of them were good. There were sport specific logos, utilized to the greatest effect with the Orr uniforms.

Hey Iowa State, do you see this? Someone who hated that logo and was around for the era, yet has changed their mind and is fully on board. Good design transcends! Why don't you email the athletic department that you changed your mind, so others can. I'm serious.

@Kagavi - in your opinion, is it at all realistic that the AD would Ctrl-Z the current design and go with the clearly better design that you came up with awhile ago?

No need to erase the new Cyclone, just keep using it as a retail mark and in other applications, such as a custom emoji, or with the Jr. Cy Club. However, let's take another swing at the REAL secondary nickname logo.

I'm the only person in the state that actually really digs the circle cy logo.

You should probably see someone about that.

Same here and sorry, calling Kagavi's design the Orr logo is wrong. IIRC, was never used with the MBB program.

Adding to the comments above, pretty much Orr's whole time at Iowa State, if someone called up the AD and said, give me your primary Iowa State school logo, it was the "Orr Cyclone", usually paired with the Cyclones script below.

There is no doubting that Cy was enjoying a golden era though. BUT that's a whole different story.

BRING BACK THE BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just for those who don't know, blue made an brief appearance in the 1930s when one of our football coaches thought we could be more successful if we copied EVERYTHING Michigan did, including blue jerseys.

The plan, uhhh, failed.

Updated Orr-nado is beautiful. Some are mentioning they want it trimmed. Very few even like the new Cyclone logo. All are combined in the attached. These helmets are just for fun. View attachment 50475
I really like these. More modern lines than the 1980's logo, and infinitely better than the new logos.

The Criner Cyclone only lasted 4 years on the helmet. Probably a legit reason for doing so and it wasn't entirely due to the end of Criner regime. Saying it lasted ten years is a stretch.

It was an unrealistic expectation on anyone's part the Criner Cyclone would be revived at this point in time for both aesthetic and historical reasons as well as Campbell's desire for completely new branding without shelving the primary logo and primary school colors.. And I did not see a new Cyclone design here (and I could have missed it) that was both significantly better than the new one and didn't somewhat replicate the Criner Cyclone.

Excellent work on those. Don't know if I like it, but since it's "for fun," I've seen a lot worse ideas for sure. An example: A helmet logo I noticed about a week ago.

If it's not a pain, could you include gold helmet w/ cardinal logo, and gold-on-cardinal w/ gold facemask? Thanks (i like to see the color combo possibilities with a refined flat-mono logo).

School logo =/= helmet logo.

You are right, it wasn't ten years. It was actually longer. Quick search of "1995 Iowa State" on eBay revealed the Orr Cyclone on the Softball Media Guide cover, as seen below. This is from the same year that the Twister Cy came out.

At that point, Jim Criner had been gone from Iowa State for a decade, so that's four years with Criner and ten years without. Do people call the I-State logo the Chizik logo? The fact remains, it was the school logo for Johnny Orr's last 11 years at Iowa State.

Also, trust me, there was nothing unrealistic about the revival of the Orr Cyclone, especially within the football program.

I can do that, yes. I will probably post it in the "New Uniform Thread" forum so that the original purpose of this one doesn't go more off topic than originally intended.

one of the most ridiculous anti-orrnado arguments i'm seeing is that people think it looks too much like the texas logo. i mean, i guess it does, in the same way that florida kinda looks like a gun or a cloud can look like a fire truck. if there's legitimate confusion about the orrnado and a longhorn, i can't imagine these peoples' confusion when it comes to schools with 'M' logos.

These are also pretty darn cool, though I would expect to see them in orange and black as an alternate for Okie State. At first glance they looked like a bandit's bandanna.

Judging by some of the twitter chatter I would say that Learfield had a big say in the new logo as well

Can you elaborate? - I guess I don't know what the do. In that case, all of these much improved mock-ups (Kagavi, amestoplease in post #136 need to be sent to them ASAP!)

Let's say the Powers That Be are hell-bent on advancing the new tornado as a secondary helmet logo, and are unyielding to the throwback cyclone. I still think it's a lazily designed funnel cloud, but as others have said, insistence on the multi-color complication makes it even worse.

To make it even serviceably effective, you have to limit it to one color or possibly two (depending on helmet background). Excuse my crude renderings, I did these in about 20 minutes.

ugliness aside, i still don't see how this was deemed an acceptable mark for a helmet purely from a visual standpoint. squint your eyes and the whole thing disappears. a thin outline isn't going to cut it. during that texas game, my cousin texted me and said, 'what the hell is on the helmets, a pork chop?'
