Defense was great, so much better than I ever thought we could be on that side of the ball.

Offense is horrible right now. I'm not mad that we lost, I'm mad that we have the conference player of the year, 4 senior guards that have experience, and can only muster 50 points in a game. Dribbling around and pumping a bad shot at the end of the shot clock is not offense. We can correct this stuff and get better but I have serious concerns with where we are right now.

Monte isn't much of a creator and I think we are seeing that exposed right now. He's a great distributor and manager of the game but isn't great at creating, which is what we are asking him to do in one on one ans pick and role situations. Off ball movement will help with this and hopefully we see more of that going forward.

Looking ahead and I'm not sure this team can put together an NCAA quality resume. Beating Cincy was really important.

Let's say this team finishes the non-con strong at 10-2. If Miami doesn't make the tourney, not a single one of those ten wins will be quality. And ISU scheduled really bad mid-major schools who have no shot of adding RPI depth like Georgia Southern or Chattanooga in years past. So ISU would need quality Big 12 wins, which at this point with our rebounding, I'd give zero chance of beating KU, BU, or WVU. That's 0-6. ISU would need to win 9 of the remaining 12 conference games just to get to 19-11. Yikes.

There is a lot of season and quality games left, but this could get away from ISU fast.

We likely can't at this point. We're setting ourselves up as the team that can play good teams tough but can't pull off a win. That's always a team that doesn't belong in the tournament.

Assuming a win over Iowa, we'll be arguing whether our best noncon win was Miami or Iowa. That's not helping our case. Without a boatload of huge conference wins, we won't have the resume to last long in the tourney discussion.

What i noticed:

  • Shooting a lot of 20 foot shots (Hoiberg said the worst shot in basketball)
  • No inside scoring - do not have anyone that can score down low. (maybe Young when he gets back?)
  • Naz has been off....been watching too much Golden State with his 30 ft jumpers
  • Lacking ball movement
  • Defense good minus first half of the Zags
  • Bowie - painful to watch shoot free throws
  • Bowie - a black hole when the ball gets passed to him. Every time its put your head down and put up some out of control shot
  • They miss Niang more than i thought they would.

I think we got spoiled with Hoiberg, he was the king of running successful set plays out of timeouts. Prohm hasn't shown a lot of promise in this area, and our end of game situations have been a hot mess lately.

True. However IIRC the end of halves with Kane usually were Kane dribbling around and firing some off-cuff 3 at the buzzerish.

Maybe it was just Kane not listening too....in the famous Naz Long shot that put ISU/OSU in OT in Hilton, Kane was visibly irritated that Long didn't give the ball up to him.

I find it odd that ISU doesn't even just have some general set plays to call out just to go for at least a decent look. Don't high school teams usually have that set up by December?

mmm you must drink alot of kool-aid

I'd like to know what you've seen that makes you think this is a selfish team. You have to have reasons. And bad offense isn't a reason.

5 assists on 22 made FG's tells the whole story to me. Way to much 1 on 1 hero ball type of stuff in the half-court. Need to move the ball side to side, etc.

Thank you, it makes me cringe when I see the constant hero ball posts. It isn't as if guys are open and being missed. There is no movement away from the ball. There are no back cuts, no off the ball screens. People aren't moving and people aren't open. There's not a lot left to do except try to create with the ball. The offense is bad right now but this is not a selfish team, and this is not a lazy team. Right now this is a really good defensive team that's still struggling to figure out how to play without the best offensive player in school history.

He threw his head back like he got punched in the face. You can say refs have a hard job and "real time" and whatever else but if you can't tell that was football acting from about 5 feet away then you shouldn't be reffing anything.
If you rewatch the game you'll notice he does that head whip thing multiple times but it only got called like once...at the most important time of the game.

I was thinking about this too when people were complaining about end of half shots. All the big end of game shots in the past few years were pretty much scramble plays, not some brilliant offensive set. Our end if half offense 3 years ago was absolutely brutal. Not saying what we saw last night was OK, but people tend to have a pretty rosy memory.

Almost no ball movement. They don't make the extra pass. A lot of "YOLO EFF IT" shots way too early in the shot clock after maybe one pass in the possession. Small amount of assists.

Monte is not Diante Garrett. He is very good but we need to use Burton at game end. Nitrou Long looks lost out there right now. Matt played his best game.

It's a big problem that refs get worse an games get more intense. They're human and right there. It's hard to not interject yourself in to the outcome at that point but that is their job and they don't do it well consistently. Sometimes I wish they would just say that cbb Will be reffed like the NBA. Its not perfect but they have a consistency and have pretty much eliminated the head scratchers and it's mainly because the players know what is what on a nightly basis.

This missing the tourney is crazy talk. An 18-12 (9-9) Iowa State team will get a 7-10 seed. Unless we literally lose every single game against Kansas, Baylor, and West Virginia. In that case maybe an 11-12, but still in.

Refs also missed a foul on Burtons late out back after the Morris miss. He got smacked right across the chest and shoulder but didn't flinch cause he is so strong. Should have been and one.
Oh and what the fk was Thomas doing at the end of Reg with that turnover???

That was a bad one all around, starting with Monte allowing himself to get a little trapped between the boundary line and center court, and then Matt along the baseline as well. I was screaming time out because you could sense that was a mess from the moment it crossed half court. Maybe Cincinnati switched defense on us and we just didn't identify it.

Matt did make up for it with his play in OT, and all around, he was one of our bright spots though.

Yeah I don't know if he "made up for it" bc that could have been the play that cost them the game. Call time out and you can at least run the clock and if you miss they only have about 4-5 seconds to get off a shot. But he did play a good game otherwise.

I don't think we're going to miss the tournament but getting a high seed is not looking promising at this point. We dropped from 60 to 106 in the RPI with the loss and with a lot of games against teams with very low RPI's coming up, it's going to be tough to get much higher before conference play starts.
