The amount of crap and hate Kansas fans spew towards Iowa State on the college basketball subreddit, shows they are irked by ISU. They just like to pretend that they don't treat us as their biggest Big 12 game of the year because they're so arrogant.

Tuco just craving attention....

There will be KU fans who will never recognize any Big 12 team as their rival, ever, because rival connotes "relative equal," and because KU won something before their grandparents were alive, no one will ever be close to them today.

Iowa State has won 2 consecutive Big 12 Championships. I have a t-shirt that says so.

Disclaimer: If Kansas doesn't have to put the words "Regular Season" in front of their Championships, Iowa State doesn't have to put the words "Tournament" in front of theirs. They are both Championships of the Big 12.

3-1 in the last 4 against KU. Wish KU would be more competitive.

So ISU needs to win 11 consecutive titles before we can be rivals, got it.
Do they have to be real titles or can they be shared, ya know, no clear winner, like some of KU's?

No, not 11. Just more than one. Absent the 100+ years of hatred between the two states and the two programs, it will probably take more than winning the conference once for KU fans to get real riled up about KU-ISU. That's not a slight against ISU. You guys have a great team right now, it takes a little extra something to go from the competition to the rival is all. I've just seen a number of other contenders come and go around the top.

Your rival is just that team that you HATE that you always have to battle year in and year out to get to the top. And most sports rivalries have something from outside the sport that sauces it up a bit. KU-MU went back to the Civil War days. We played 267 games versus Mizzou dating back to 1907; you can't seriously expect 3 out of 4 wins in two years to fill that void.

Obviously @ISU and @OU are going to be KU's toughest Big 12 games of the year. But as history has shown, it's the other 7 conference road games that will likely determine who wins the Big 12.

Most Big 12 champs are going to drop 1 or 2 of their toughest road games; it's to be expected. No one expects to win the Big 12 at 18-0.

Hmm, for ISU not being a rival, we sure do have a lot of Jayhawks spending time over here. I consider Iowa a rival, and freely admit to viewing their boards on occasion. But I've never considered posting there, just seems, I don't know, kinda desperate maybe? You being here supports my point.
ISU doesn't have KU's credentials, but maybe that's not required for a rivalry.
Interest level may be a better measure, and ISU has clearly ruffled some Jayhawk feathers.

ISU won two in a row back in '00 and '01 and a rivalry never developed. It will probably take ISU winning something like three in a five year period. The problem is that the phrase "Hilton Magic is Back!" seems to be heard around every five to seven years.

For the record I don't consider ISU-KU to be a rivalry right now unlike some Cyclone fans because I think ISU needs to win more first. But I do think that an outright regular season title would change the status to "budding rivalry" or something similar.

I never expect it to approach KU-MU or ISU-AIB East in terms of fanbase dislike. Most of that is history, part of that is KU fans' utter indifference to the other major sport we both play. Even though ISU and KU are the worst football programs in the Big 12, ISU's fan support outstrips KU's by light years, and that's just not conducive to a rivalry.

Since Mizzou left the Big 12, ISU is the closest thing to a rival for KU, Ive heard many KU fans say that themselves. Id say its a rivalry now. Having beaten them in the last two tournaments.

Other sports mean nothing to a basketball rivalry. Ever hear anything about the great Duke-Carolina football rivalry? Neither have I. It doesn't require you to be in the same state or in close proximity. Syracuse-Georgetown was a great basketball rivalry and the two cities are nearly 400 miles apart.

It's no slight against ISU to say we just aren't there yet and won't be, regardless of results, in the next few years. It takes a LONG time for a rivalry to develop. It could happen down the line, we'll see. KU will likely do their part and stay in the mix at the top. ISU just needs to do their half of the work and stay in the mix year after year. So far, so good.

Rivalry has nothing to do with relative success. KSU is ku's rival and so are we as we all hate each other.
