We know that Otz has enthusiasm and zeal for the most important part of college basketball - recruiting. We have no idea if Hornacek would.
To me there is some question if that enthusiasm and zeal is still there--and leads to the same results--when you're a head coach and have to deal with the responsibilities that come along with that. Managing your staff and players, PR / donor appearances, commercials, coach's call-in shows, etc.
As I stated previously I'm not exactly opposed to Otz... certainly can't blame him for wanting to take a step up, and trust Jamie's judgement based on available options when the time comes. But not everyone who is a really good role player automatically becomes a really good leader, regardless of field/career. Promotion to the level of incompetence.
Based on what I've seen/heard, I'm not exactly convinced recruiting was Hoiberg's favorite part of the job. However, it seems he did a good job of surrounding himself with the right people and managing them effectively enough to put together competitive teams.
