Its not my memory, its my multitude of Cyclone friends. McD was NOT seen as even remotely a good hire by any of them, most who have been lifelong basketball season ticket holders.

Based on marketplace demand at that time, GMac was a good hire for ISU. He was also being pursued by K-State and AZ State and ISU beat them to the punch. Obviously, it didn't work out but the guy was in demand by other P5 programs at that time.

Assistants leave to broaden their experience. If anything, the move would add to Otz's resume.

Otz, supposedly has said that the move has made them more aware that they wanted to be back in the Midwest again.

There is the real possibility that Hornacek could coach ISU for a year with the team we have coming back and then leave. Definite possibility.

First bolded: So do head coaches (for better jobs). If Otz did it once, why wouldn't he do it again.

Second bolded: Possibly, although I think 2-3 years is more likely. Which is why I love the idea of TJ being Jeff's associate head coach and then taking over for him if/when he bolts back to the NBA.

How can you possibly feel that TJ should be the only candidate with what's at stake? I mean if Pollards best buddy ends up being the HC so be it but to say JP and Leath shouldn't be considering other options is just silly.

So JP hired a recruiting firm to just give himself cover?

The list of low-major coaches that CW listed just has me eagerly anticipating the hiring of our very own "Todd Licklighter".......

Yes, I can now see that leaving a position in order to come to a school where there is a high likelihood that the program would be turned upside-down in a month, and your new job would be at risk would make a lot of sense. Either he's an idiot, or you are. If Fred could not commit to Diallo that he'd be here, how could he commit to Otz?

Are you really calling me an idiot for choosing to side with actual people who know TJ than random internet message board posters? If so...wow.

Hahaha. Been a Cyclone fan for over 40 years and NOT ONE fellow Cyclone fan I know saw McD as even a decent hire, let alone a great one. In the case we find ourselves in, the iron is hot, and Pollard MUST set the bar as high as he can.

Serious case of revisionist history. Or you don't know any other Cyclone fans.

So Fred should have never been hired in the first place??? Fred had absolutely ZERO coaching experience. ZERO. Not even as an assistant.

for the last time..this is just ignorant thinking and uneducated. It's Fred frickin Hoiberg. The guy played in the NBA and was an All American Golden boy at ISU. He spent years learning the game from 4-5 Hall of fame coaches. He's completely cerebral and has a star quality. Every single person who has ever known Fred has said he will make a great coach one day and these are from former NBA players and coaches who are or will be in the hall of fame. TJ has neither. To compare the two is just insane. There are former NBA players who have zero experience coaching who start with an NBA team as HC. Hiring star players who are smart is totally different than hiring assistants with zero experience and little basketball playing time.

lastly, the is program 5 years ago was a complete mess and we couldn't have begged the Drake coach to come here. Today it's a top 15 program.

Any head coach can move. If Otz gets a better job offer then wouldn't that be a good thing? That would likely mean Iowa State was successful.

There is the real possiblity that Otz could move on and not take the assistant position. WHY should Otz staying be a pre-requisite for the hiring of Hornacek? Hornacek should get the job based on his own merits, and not be contingent on the retention of present staff. Otherwise Hornacek is just an expensive figurehead.

I posted this scenario last night in a different thread (dream scenario, and will most likely not happen)

1. Fred ends up taking the Bulls job. (We all cry)
2. ISU hires Jeff Hornacek
3. Jeff Hornacek is successful with us either Winning National Championship, going to a Final Four, or just Big12 Championship.
4. This success will ultimately lead to him going to the Bulls, because you know that organization likes that sort of thing.
5. Fred has done well, but he is too much of a "yes" man for the front office and needs to "lead" the team. They thank him for his time and fire him.
6. Fred comes back to ISU, and we welcome him with open arms.
7. He stays till he retires at the age of 68

One can dream. That is my dream right now anyway.

Where is he going to go? Not a lot of jobs open in June...

TJ staying was a pre-requisite when Hoiberg was hired, why wouldn't he for the next coach?

Apparently we've already had one key target for 2016 say he will take ISU of the list if Fred leaves. This has been my point. TJ has been a great recruiter but for other head coaches. There is no guarantee that remains when he's the HC. Good players want to make sure they are going to play for a coach who might get them to the league. If you are a top recruit would u sign up to play for a guy who hasn't coached a single player? It worked for Fred because he had all the NBA GM contacts to float around.

Duh, don't you know assistants get credit for getting all recruits to a school but get no blame when the team doesn't win. Sounds like a good gig to me!

Exaclty. TJ is on staff already. Just bought a house too. He ain't leaving and his wife wouldn't let him anyway. JP will make sure that TJ is retained with the new coach.

Yes, I have seen the future and Fred is leaving to satisfy his NBA hunger in time to come back and coach the twins at ISU.

no problem - I may have misread that.

I do think that there is plenty of evidence that NBA coaches can do well at the college level and I'm not sure that there are many examples of such coaches flaming out at the college level (although there are countless examples of college coaches failing in the NBA).

I'm saying there are NO examples of an NBA coach jumping to the college ranks with no previous college experience. NONE, ZIP, ZERO. Completely unprecedented. Your article proved that there are no coaches that fit Hornacek's example currently.

And there were no examples of what we did to hire Hoiberg either. :)

Hornacek is risky. EVERY hire is risky. I happen to think he is less risky than almost all of our other options.

So do you not think Hornacek would be a good hire? What exactly are you arguing?

I think Hornacek would be a great hire, just like I thought Hoiberg was a great hire.

What I'm saying is that Hornacek's resume does not make a it a slam dunk. There is a not a single head coach in college basketball today that jumped from the NBA to college with no previous college experience. Not a single example to compare this to.

Doesn't mean its a bad idea, just unprecedented.

Whoops, very bad typo. I meant TJ should NOT be the default an only candidate. I really need to type better.

Why does that matter? The guy can coach and is a good teacher. Obviously there is risk in every hire but I think Hornacek would be as close to a slam dunk as we could get. Keeping TJ on staff would help with the recruiting concerns.

Has it ever happened?

There is risk in ANY hire. But, again, if you asked a risk management to analyze Hornacek and TJ, I would bet my house that Hornacek would be much, much less risky.

Have you ever done risk management? Its partially based on past experience. You could probably do the math and find out that similar hires to TJ are successful 75% or 50% or 25% or 10% of the time. The fact is there is no past experience to determine how a hire similar to Hornacek has fared in the past. IT JUST DOESN'T happen.
