Hoiberg did not have any college recruiting experience before he was hired and he adapted well. What sold the kids was that he had an NBA pedigree. Much like Hoiberg, Hornacek would adapt well with the recruiting scene and T.J. or another assistant would guide him. Shouldn't even be a concern for Pollard or Hornacek.

Hornacek would be a amazing but not expecting it. The people that have a grudge against him for whatever stupid reason need to get over it

Actually, Otz has a lot more coaching experience than Fred had when he was hired. And look at the list of candidates that CW listed. For many of them, the spot where they are at now is their first HC gig. Otz would likely be a better hire than any of those guys because he has proven to be a pretty good recruiter at Iowa State and at Washington.

For all you know, Otz could be the next Brad Stephens, Ben Jacobson, or Tom Izzo, etc. All were assistants at their schools who became great head coaches.

Even Hornacek has shortcomings since he has never had to recruit players for his team. Recruiting is the key at the college level. And Hornacek has zero experience recruiting.

I think it's fair to say that Hoiberg is an exception to the rule. It's not fair to compare potential hires to him, he's a uniquely talented person in a unique position. I personally think that Morgan is an exception to the rule the other way as well.

This is the contradiction I don't get. You don't care if a homerun hire is only here for 2 years, but our current home run hire is leaving after 5 and getting KILLED for it.

I'm certainly not killing Hoiberg for leaving. But I certainly think it taught us something...its HARD to find a coach to stay at ISU for more than 5 years. We haven't had it since Orr. So if that's the reality of Iowa State, let's find the best possible coach out there and not worry how long he will be here.

Wayne Morgan was a good recruiter too. Doesn't mean it translates into HC success.

Yes there is a chance Otz is the next Brad Stephens. But there is also a chance he is the next Wayne Morgan. My argument against Otz is that the program is at a level where we can't afford to take that risk IMO.

From Gary Parrish's article yesterday, only 9 times in 40 years in all of college basketball has a new coach inherited a top 10 team. We will likely never be in this position again where the ISU job is as attractive as it is right now. Let's capitalize on that.

I don't see how the risk with Otz, where the AD and staff know him very very well, is more than the risk of any mid-major coach not being able to make the jump from overachieving with mid-major athletes to coaching a team with Top 10 talent. Hell, the two most talked about "mid-major" coaches, Underwood and Prohm, really coach in low level conferences, not the Southern and the OVC, not the Mountain West or the Valley.

Someone like Leon Rice, Archie Miller or Chris Mack would be the least risky, but of those, I think Rice is the only one we have a shot at. Hornacek would have lesser risk as well. But between a low/mid major coach without a long track record of success, and a known quantity like Otz, I think the risk level is fairly even.

Otz stayed on staff from McDermott to Hoiberg. And while he might stay on staff with Hornacek, we do not know how their personalities mesh. Maybe Otz, takes his pay and moves on from ISU and we have no continuity from Hoiberg's staff to Hornacek's. Maybe our stacked team does not mesh well with Hornacek. Just playing devil's advocate. But there are risks with every hire.

Otz has recruited many of our current roster and previous rosters to Iowa State. Or didn't you know that?

Brad Underwood is a really good coach. Plays a faster system and is pretty creative offensively. He scored 77 points against UNI this year which is a pretty good output.

He'd do very well at ISU.

Until Weber is fired at KState and then he's gone. We need stability in our system to maintain success, Underwood is going to coach at KSU as soon as he can.

Just wondering if Morgan's replacement was better than him. How did Morgan's successor do?

As far as Hornacek goes, it appears that there could be legs to the rumors. Hornacek may actually be considering it. And the lure of inheriting a Top 10 team is likely a very big factor. IMO, it will come down to Hornacek or Otz. JMO.

Well guys, I just talked with a family friend of Otz and apparently Otz is slated for the replacement of Hoiberg. Sad news if it ends up being true.

Is this the same family friend that told you this just 6 days ago?

I just talked with a family friend of Otz and he said the feeling he was getting from Otz was Hoiberg will be around another 2-3 years.

That second part is my concern. That's just telling ISU fans that we don't deserve nice things (if this happens and he takes that approach).

If he takes that approach, he needs to get out.

Unfortunately, JP is incredibly cheap - great guy and has done great things, but there is no spinning that he is way too cheap where it counts. Over the past 5 years, our Athletic Department has seen it's revenues increase 70% and yet he still wants to pretend it's the 1990s when it comes to paying the head coach of our pinnacle program.

Money hasn't bought those guys yet, it won't know. Either they like the opportunity for next year or they don't. That's pretty much what it boils down to.
