I'm going to stick my head back in the sand after I say this but here it goes anyway. From everything I've read the Bulls fanbase is freaking out just as bad as we are because they don't want anything to do with Fred. I'm not convinced he goes anywhere yet. This same thing happened last year with Golden State and they had a roster that fit Fred's style way better than this Bulls team does. I'm not ready to go over to his house with a can of gas and a book of matches quite yet. He was silent last year too and we know he talked to somebody about the Warriors when he was in Napa on vacation. Lets just sit back have a beer and relax. I'm going back to the sandbox so I can stick my head in there.

I came up with this list last week assuming that we would get to this point. I'm sure some will kill me for posting it when Iowa State doesn't even have a vacancy but my Twitter feed is blowing up with peeps wondering who some different candidates might be. No insider info here (unless noted). Just off the top of my head list for your entertainment/fodder.

Note: I think the only way ISU can attract a proven winner at this level at this point in time is to offer 2.5 million or more. That would be more than Hoiberg made last year. I just don't see it happening, but who knows what Jamie has up his sleeve.

My initial list...

Realistic candidates (guys who I think would consider the job for what I think it will pay)

Bryce Drew, Valparaiso head coach (Baylor head coach Scott Drew’s brother)

Brad Underwood, Stephen F. Austin head coach (former KSU assistant)

Jared Haase, UAB head coach (former Kansas player)

Steve Prohm, Murray State head coach

Chris Holtman, Butler head coach

Leon Rice, Boise State head coach

T.J. Otzelberger, Iowa State assistant coach

Long shots

Jeff Hornacek, head coach of the Phoenix Suns (However I've been told recently that this is a growing possibility)

Nick Nurse, Toronto Raptors assistant (Iowa native)

Extreme long shots

Danny Manning, Wake Forest head coach

Tad Boyle, Colorado head coach

Ben Jacobson, Northern Iowa head coach (Can't find a single reason why he'd want the job. Would be very unpopular with fans too)

Tim Floyd, UTEP head coach (former Iowa State head coach)

Archie Miller, Dayton head coach (recently turned down 3 mil a year at Florida)

Fran Fraschilla, ESPN analyst (I’ve heard that he wants to get back into coaching but don’t think he is the type of candidate that Iowa State would be interested in)

1. Hornacek

2. Leon Rice

3. TJ

From the realistic list...

My list in order.

1. Hornacek
2. Otz
3. Underwood

I know it's been said before that Hornacek doesn't really want to come back to the midwest, but my thinking is if he could come him for 3-5 years to coach as well as groom TJ and then have TJ scoot into the head coach role once he leaves, I think that would be best. It would allow TJ to get a great mentor and would position us to have a coach that would stick around for a while and not jump at the next big thing (since him and Allison love Ames so much).

If we can't get Hornacek, I'm all for taking a chance on TJ for HC just like we did with Fred in hopes of it paying off.

Just my two cents!

Sorry, let me re-phrase:

Haas and Manning better not EVER AGAIN step foot on the ISU Campus. ESPECIALLY as representatives of our university. **** them and their Kansas roots all to hell!!!

Is that better?
I understood what you meant the first time you typed it - don't understand why anyone needed to "correct" you.

I must have been in a coma if I missed this last season.

Who are we genuinely worried about transferring. Niang? Senior. McKay & Nader? Senior already transferred so he can't. Naz? Where? Morris is the lone worry, but if he really has designs on NBA after this coming year as Rob has mentioned a while back, I doubt he postpones it a year - particularly if the rest of the core of the team is intact. Thomas? Not to be mean, but oh well. Cooke and Burton are transfers too who would lose eligibility - so not likely.

I honestly don't think TJ would be a bad choice. I think he's a solid x and o's guy and we will continue to bring in high quality recruits as long as he's on the staff. I mean the guy brought in great talent on mcdermotts teams

I also would go for making Otz an interim head coach this year since he has such a great connection with the current guys and then give it a whirl. Honestly, if he can't make it next season as a head coach, he'll never make it. LOL!

That would be the death knell for recruiting going forward. 0% chance it happens. Give Otz a 4-5 year deal or don't give him the job.

A team full of guys that wish they had more eligibility so they could transfer or hadn't already transferred so they could transfer now or had tried to go pro last season. Sounds like a recipe for some great things to happen.

I am to the point if Fred leaves and we don't hire Hornacek. Just let T.J. take the reigns and see how he does. The other candidates mentioned aside from Franscilla don't excite me.
