This thread is comical. UNI's play-by-play guy (and a guy who has his own sports talk radio show) says UNI would beat KU or Oklahoma and then follows it up with "I'm a homer" in the exact same tweet. Shocking that he has confidence that his team could beat another ranked team.
He probably should have said "To please all the Iowa State fans: UNI is terrible; has played nobody and beat nobody; the MVC is weak; UNI is overated; Hoiberg is God; Texas Tech would be the best team in the MVC despite losing to Loyola by 18 points on a neutral court; and UNI would lose by 50+ points to KU and Oklahoma."

Warning!!! Do not open this thread unless you want to read how UNI and Wichita State are on the same level as Kentucky and UVA.

It's stone cold stupid in there. If their team is 1% as overconfident as it's fans you've got your easy first round upset pick.

I don't think any UNI fans said we are on the same level as Kentucky or Virginia. The quote from Panthernation was talking about how Kentucky, Virginia, UNI, and Wichita State all have good defenses which they feel would give Iowa State trouble.

My sister is a UNI grad and she is one of a few good fans. She cheers for UNI over Iowa State. She's annoying about it to the point of us not being able to talk sports though :)

But since my parents live near Waterloo, they've had UNI season tickets since the new arena opened. Attendance has been bad for years. Even this year, it was bad until the Wichita State game and that was a sell out because there were quite a few WSU fans there.

UNI fans (i.e. Gary Rima, etc) smell blood in the water though. They are much happier to be ahead of us than they would be to be ahead of Iowa.

Yes, our attendance is bad (students in particular), especially for being a Top 15 ranked team. However, saying the Wichita State game was only sold out due to WSU fans is a complete joke. That game sold out in 2 days.

Who returns next year for them?

Our starting 5 will likely be:
G - Washpun
G - Bohannon
F/G - Morgan or Jesperson
F - McDonnell, Carlson, or Friedman
F - Koch

Likely a bit of a down year next year due to the lack of post depth. I expect ISU to win handily next season.

Heavily off topic but I wish we can have chants like Oklahoma's.

The Brittany Griner chant directed at McKay was just hilarious and clever.

Wichita State is 0-3 or 0-2 in games against good teams depending on who you call good.
UNI is 2-1 or 1-1 in games against good teams depending on who you call good.

Does either team have a single good road win? Zero.

Teams from mid-majors who get hyped in the regular season...not as good a track record as the cinderella teams that come out of nowhere.

UNI couldn't win on the road against an unranked VCU squad or against an unranked Evansville squad. Clearly they have shown they have the ability to go on the road to Oklahoma and Kansas and win.

Gary Rima is like the Jon Miller of the Panthers... he is an idiot.

Label me butthurt then. I will never, ever, be all happy and joyous that Iowa and UNI are doing well. The only way this sort of thinking happens is if someone moves out of the state for a long time and is not around those annoying fan bases, or the person was never a big ISU fan in the first place.

No, I've moved out of state, and I want UI and UNI to struggle too. F - them both. There are some D-bag sqawk fans here in KC, which is gross. (This fanbase, because let's face it... they are one-in-the-same, were actively rooting for ISU to be tossed from the Big 12 when the conference started losing members. I'll never forget that ****. Thus, I wish nothing but the worst for UI and UNI athletics.)

It does ISU no good if Iowa is winning or getting attention. UNI is more "meh, who cares?" They're annoying than anything since they truly are sqawk fans in disguise. ISU being in the spotlight alone is the best for us and our continued success. It's nice though that I see way more Cyclones down here in KC, and not really seeing that stupid sqawk-parrot logo with the hanging wattle all the time is nice, I must say.

"They will fold up like a cheap tent the minute they run into a UNI, Kentucky, WSU, or Virginia type team in the tourney. The minute a team punches them in the mouth by playing team defense, they are done. They were driving at will on OK and getting open 3s and still got down 20. UNI is built to beat ISU and will if we get our shot in March."

at this point, its byond the Kook-Aid, even Iowa fans don't act this way, they know their limitation. UNI fans just think their team is the second coming of ******. I can't take a team seriously if they think they can beat anybody while playing teams like Drake (the team that ISU beat with our bench players for most of the second half).

Did they even watch their game against Wichita State? They couldn't keep anyone out of the paint at all. Niang would bully Wichita inside, while McKay would tossed in jail for what he would do to them. As long as we don't let them rain 3 pointers on us we would beat them by double digits.

For a while there I was kinda jumping on the UNI bandwagon. It's a good story for the state of Iowa. There are a ton of homegrown Iowa kids on that team, and several from the CR/IC area. And I like their head coach too.

However, I'm done now. I hope they lose in the 1st round. I also hope Wichita State smokes them in their 2nd meeting. I still like the team and coaches, but their fans and their media people have done it for me.

At this point I hope we do meet them in the tourney so we can smoke them by 20. One could argue they haven't beaten ANYONE. Wichita State and Iowa are there only 2 wins against a team with a pulse, and Wichita State is not very good.... and we know how bad Iowa is, especially early in the year when ISU and UNI played them.

The MVC is still a complete joke. Nothing against Daniel Stensland for ISU, but that's the kind of player that you're going up against night in and night out in the MVC.

No. I do think Jackson would get playing time at Drake though with as bad as their roster is.

So they are a fraud and yet you are afraid to play them on the road. Makes sense if you don't think about it.

Maybe we should play them on the road every year for practice since we are quite frankly not good at it.

Take a look around college basketball. Does Kansas or Kansas State play at Wichita? Does Ohio State play at Dayton or Ohio? Do Texas and Baylor play at SMU or Houston? No. Most major conference teams don't set up series like this because they don't need to, just like Iowa and Iowa State don't need to play at UNI and Drake, and it's the same reason as to why Duke and Kentucky probably wont be setting up a home and home series with Iowa State or Iowa any time soon. I don't hate UNI, I have family who has UNI football season tickets and often use them when they can't go and I'd rather cheer for them than most teams that play college basketball, but that's pretty much how it is.

The loss at Evansville is unexplainable, similar to ISU's loss at Texas Tech.
However, VCU is a different story. They started the year ranked #15, then lost to Villanova, @ Old Dominion, and to Virginia which knocked them out of the Top 25. They beat UNI at home in double-OT which started a 12-game winning streak for them which got them back up to #14 in the rankings. VCU has now lost 2 of 3 because their best player, Briante Weber, is out for the year because he blew out his knee.
If you want to try and use the Evansville loss to put down UNI, so be it. However, if you're trying to use a double-OT road loss to a good VCU squad, try harder.

If VCU has "good squad" they still shouldn't lose to Richmond and St. Bonaventure, even without Weber.

We already did that to the dude on Baylor a couple years ago.

Is ESPN doing the bracket buster series again this year and if so did UNI get a game?

Nope. BracketBusters ended a couple years ago.
Pretty sure UNI lost the home-and-home series with ISU and Iowa, BracketBusters, and the MVC-MWC Challenge all in the same year. Makes scheduling a whole lot tougher for a mid-major without those 4 games guaranteed every year.

I'd think the MVC would try to get another conference vs. conference series going at some point. I'm sure they could get something going with the Conference USA or WCC, or maybe even resume it with the Mountain West if a network would want to pick up a good amount of the games.

That's pretty solid rational thinking. By that logic ISU really sucks too, since we were down by 19 points in the first half against Texas Tech. F*ckin' Texas Tech!

Some of you guys love to talk up ISU so much and then get mad when fans of other teams do it. It's our job as fans to be excited about our team. Let them have their moment.. It's cute

If VCU has "good squad" they still shouldn't lose to Richmond and St. Bonaventure, even without Weber.

I think what he was trying to say is that VCU is a really good mid-major team... comparable to what he thinks UNI is. Fine... I can agree with that. So if VCU is his example maybe he would care to explain how a really good VCU team got taken to the woodshed when they stepped up and played a couple of "Big Boy" programs in Villanova (a 77-53 loss) and Virginia (a 74-57 loss).

His shining example of a really good mid-major team (like UNI) played a couple of ranked teams from the power conferences and got their teeth kicked down their throat. Strange... that is exactly what I would expect to happen to UNI if they had done the same.

UNI has 1 win this season against teams ranked inside the top 36 of the RPI. Could they handle the Big XII? You know... the conference where 7 of the 10 teams in the league are ranked inside the top 30 of the RPI.

UNI has played 3 games against the RPI top 50 this year... Kansas has already played 12, Oklahoma has already played 13, Baylor has already played 10, Iowa State has already played 10, Oklahoma State has already played 11, West Virginia has already played 6, Texas has already played 10, K-State has already played 11, TCU has already played 9, and Texas Tech has already played 9.

How pathetic is the Missouri Valley? Combined they have played 38 games against the RPI top 50 and they have a pristine 6-32 record. 5 of the 10 teams in the Valley have 0 wins against the RPI top 50 combining for an 0-20 record.

How strong is the Big XII? Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa State, and Oklahoma State have as many or more wins individually against the RPI top 50 then the Missouri Valley has combined. (KU 8, OU 9, ISU 6, and OSU 6... 6th place Baylor has 5 and 7th place K-State has 4 or nearly as many as the entire Valley to put that in perspective)

UNI has 2 top 50 wins this year... a feat that only 9th place Texas Tech and last place TCU can't match as they only have 1 top 50 win each. Both TCU and Tech would be tied for the 2nd most top 50 wins in the Valley.

The only Big XII team with a comparable SOS rating to UNI (#146) is TCU (#166) who happens to be currently sitting in last place at 1-9 in the conference with their only win coming over 9th place Texas Tech.

Props to UNI for putting together a 22-2 record but let's not pretend that they have done anything of note this season. They have played a schedule that is beyond pathetic... and that goes for the entire Valley as well.

FWIW, they are restarting the challenge with the Mountain West next year. Good series for both leagues.
