As much as we all want to compare ISU to KSU it is about like comparing ISU to Iowa. Just not a good comparison. .

KSU has shown any program can turn it around, and that includes Iowa State.

And, as Bob Cummings would say-- hire the right coaching staff and you can turn a laughing stock team with a losing record for 20 consecutive seasons into a winner.

Could have mentioned that during those Mac years of 12 teams and two divisions, I believe we were the only team that had to play Oklahoma and Texas in a single season rotation. Maybe Baylor too? Not defending the performance, but a little goes a long way and one more win in a few of those seasons could have helped level out the peaks and valleys.

All I know is three wins will not cut it, even if two are in conference against the dregs. What a mess/miss.

I guess my question here would be whether or not the KSU turnaround is even possible today. Given the money and exposure around the sport now, I think the gap between the haves and the have nots is bigger now than it was when KSU was turning around. I think the level of competition top to bottom in the league is better, and the overall schedules we face year in and year out are more difficult. KSU made a habit of feasting on 4 non-con cupcakes every year. We only get 3, and one will always be Iowa. I'm not convinced that if you hit the reset button on KSU that a young Bill Snyder could walk into Manhattan starting today and recreate what he did.

Canceling Iowa and UNI and playing cupcakes is the only hope we have.

KSU played four cream puffs to get that record and we need to drop the Iowa game and line up three cream puffs. NO ONE looks at anything but the win lose record. Even when we beat Iowa I do not think we gain anything. Time to line three cream puffs and save our players for the nine conference games.

Ouch, this stat is one that has escaped me. I guess strength of schedule wasn't a legit excuse in all of those years. HOPE is what we have more of than any other fan base, no one has more.
I don't have a lot of hope for this season

More than anything, this thread is bringing me to a realization that Rhoads is not a guy that will get us over the hump.
And this isn't a slam. Very few coaches could do it. There's a hundred Macarneys and Ron Princes for every one Silver Fox.

I was hoping for a different TV or conference setup. Ala carte or a progressive tax on TV revenue. Greed has killed the sport for us. Now there will be unions and paid players. They might as well call it the NFL development league.

It is all based on recruiting, good recruits make coaches look good.

Except old Mack Brown kinda struggled with that as of late. I agree with your premise, but there is obviously more to it than that. You have to be able to mold a cohesive team and motivate that talent.

Kansas missed OU, Texas and Texas Tech during Mangino's Orange Bowl season, so Kansas had to play them in the same rotation too.

And we can recruit as well as k state, Baylor, Mizzou etc have over the past decade. We aren't that far off in recruiting rankings. Take a look.

Just keep a good staff together and build something. It'll never happen if we have coaches leaving every single season.

In my amateur opinion, even 20 spots in the rankings is relatively insignificant. Especially when comparing middle of the pack teams and not the top 25.

Whatever you post, imagine it in a resurrection thread in 6 months. I'm going with 6-7 wins, including 3-4 in conference. This is the year we get over the hump. Good o-line and QB making quick passes to slanting receivers will open up everything else. Worked for Baylor.
